MetaMedia
Life can be difficult, time are tough; it is very easy to feel overwhelmed. That being said, I'm curious about what you are reading, watching, listening, and playing to get through these turbulent times. I'm also interested in knowing if your consumption of media has changed over the last couple of months. Are you seeking out things that are light and easy to consume? Or maybe you seek comfort in something heavier and darker. Or maybe you've withdrawn from screens altogether and are finding pleasure in a more analog and tactile space. Share with the community if you feel up to it. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. Cheers.
ποΈ MetaDesertIslandPicks πΊ
We're close to the end of the week, let's talk about something other than politics. Let's talk about your desert island picks. Choose one film, one book, one television series, one album, and one video-game/console to take with you while stranded on a desert island*. What are your choices? Assume the media you choose will never degrade and that you have a high definition television and a consistent source of power. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. β β *No trilogies.
MetaWhatAreYouWatchingLately? πΊποΈπ½οΈπ±π»
End of another week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. Let's talk about what you're watching. Have you started any new shows? Have you been to the movie theatre lately? Any disappointments? Any surprises? Maybe you have been working your way through a filmography or a series? Maybe you're actively taking a break from film or television watching, that's cool too. Whatever it is, let's dish about some media. As always be kind to yourself and others. Cheers.
The Paint Roller AskMe's shared memory hits 2019 television
So you remember the askme from 5 years ago where we all tried to figure out what 80's tv show/intro had a character stepping through a door and getting slathered with paint as they did? Well, this recent 1980's themed Progressive insurance commercial has been airing during the current NCAA tournament, and at 18 seconds in, guess what happens. A character opens a door and gets a paint roller across their chest.
This doesn't resolve the question, but perhaps the answer is out there, somewhere. We can't all be making this up, right?
Definitive Answer to an AskMe - A Decade Later
10 years ago an AskMe user who had ordered a TV online ended up receiving the wrong order, instead being delivered a much nicer, higher end TV than the one she had purchased. This user came to AskMe inquiring if it would have been ok to have kept the nicer television, leading to a very lively discussion. A decade later, a definitive answer.
Looking back on ten years of FPPs
I've joined many web communities in my life, but none for as long or as wholeheartedly as MetaFilter. I've learned a lot, grown as a person, and taken direction from the thousands of smart, funny, and caring people who write here. And I've been inspired to write, too, putting more time and effort into researching worthwhile posts than I have at any other creative hobby. Sadly, what with work and the news chaos and competing interests it feels like there's less and less time to focus lately, and seeing linkrot erode what I do post is a drag. So when showbiz_liz's lovely celebration of ten years on the blue made me realize my own 10th Mefiversary was approaching, I was moved to do something about it. Nothing on the web lasts forever, but armed with old notes files, the Wayback Machine, and a drive to rediscover my own personal Best of the Web, I plowed through all 149 posts (and a few comments) to recover lost links, check on what had happened since, and organize it all into a single FPP omnibus for your reading pleasure. Should Debates (and other unique events) be diverted to Fanfare?
Currently things like political debates (and similar unique events, such as Apple announcements) tend to play out in related threads on the Blue. Since that just adds to (usually) already-long threads, wouldn't it make sense to require that dedicated posts be made on the Purple? (I'm not alone in thinking so.)
A IRL project, based upon Metafilter postings.
Ok, so I work for a Public Access television station. I am finally getting to the point where I have time, and a possible team of people to help me produce my own show for our channels. While brainstorming for ideas, or whenever I am just out walking and thinking to myself, I often find myself mulling over the many myriad of things that I have learned over the years of reading Metafilter, and how much I can definitely credit the users of Metafilter for enlightening me on many subjects that are often either overlooked in the mainstream media, or are contentious current social issues that many times require them to be unpacked and explained through either individual personal experience, or through often very engaging discussions with participants from all walks of life, many times with input from actual experts in the subjects that are discussed.
So my idea was to make each show based around some of the fantastic posts that I have found on Metafilter, and I would like to use some of the information that users have provided. [more inside]
Television choices = Rape
So uhh, some of the discussion in this particular trainwreck of a thread seems pretty way out of line to me. I understand folks are weirded out by the story in the link but I think some folks should consider not going quite so over the top in the future in how they handle criticizing entire fanbases. That was an extremely volatile accusation to throw out with such a wide net.
Are you on GetGlue
Why is the no-TV blog question smelling so bad?
Person asks specific question about finding postive reading to back up his media choices and the responders ask really pointed questions, snark, leave their google searches, ask more pointed questions... How does one request a cleanup pony? [more inside]
Watch Mad Men in vintage style in Tucson, Sunday evenings?
Now that Season 3 of Mad Men has begun, I'm seeking a way to watch it weekly, and it occurred to me that we Tucson MeFites have an especially stylish way to do so.... [more inside]
How about a *real* policy on spoilers?
Could we have a real documented policy on spoilers, ideally enforced by the people who approve the posts in question?
Is it *really* necessary to approve posts (Warning: multiple "House" spoilers!) that are basically spoilers as read, or that have unwarned *spoiler* links? Perhaps all spoilers should be in the "more inside" section, with a prominent warning in the description field?!
If multiple people are complaining that a post basically spoiled the episode, then what's the point of expecting the *spoilers!* or *NSFW* courtesies from posters at all, if no such standards actually exist?

Matt looks like Sylar
So, did anyone else watch "Heroes" last night and think that Sylar looks just like Matt Haughey?
TV Spoilers
Can't get enough of the "TV spoilers" debate from the grey, well, it's now available on the blue.

Television watching survey?
As an informal survey of the bizarre demographic which is Metafilter:
Television.
How many hours a day (if any) do you watch and has it increased in the past year? Or declined? I have a sense that there is an undercurrent of rebellion against TV watching, but I'm a longstanding non-TV watcher. Am I off base or not?

Too much reality tv
Do we really need to discuss Survivor, Big Brother, The Real World, etc. on Metafilter? Two links in as many days about this stuff makes me cringe. It's bad enough hearing people talk about these shows everywhere you go, does this community need to "go there" as well?
