Hey! Help us test out a new feature: a flagging option to leave a short note in a free-form text field instead of choosing one of the pre-defined flagging reasons. Pretty sure I saw this on Metafilter, but I don't recall it well enough to find it using search. The author of a cute and thought-provoking little short story gave permission for the story to be used, slightly edited, on a standardized test. The exam editor completely rewrote the story, adding a character, woodenizing the dialogue, and changing the ending. Trying to imagine where I lived when I read it, I figure that 2006--2009 was a more likely time period that 2010--2012. [more inside]

Using Camino on OS X, I get the Apache startup page ("Test page for Apache Installation" is the Title) when I try to go to ask.metafilter.com. I can't reproduce it on either Safari or Firefox on my machine, only Camino.

Looking for a link that was posted somewhere on the blue...

In connection with this Ask post, I am looking for a site that was linked on MetaFilter a few months ago that allowed you to search standardized test scores by high school or by state. standardized test -election -president failed me. As did a del.icio.us search. As did various Google searches. Help would be appreciated and repaid in golden thoughts made of the finest silks which are gold.

When I make a post (on Ask, not sure about the others), my post is appearing in another window with the preview window still hanging around in the first window. This never happened till yesterday. I'm on Safari, latest version.

The new webserver is up and ready to go. It's at 70.86.84.162 and I'd like a few folks to test it out before moving the DNS over. To hit this server instead of the current one, for now you need to edit your hosts file, adding www.metafilter.com, metatalk.metafilter, and ask.metafilter.com mappings to the new IP. It runs off the same exact database server which is separate, so test comments will be seen on both the new web server and the old one. So far in testing the new server is going smoking fast.

How many of the 13179 metafilter members actively participate (post and read) on a regular basis? Is that number the result of a SELECT MAX(user_identity) type SQL statement or is it calculated somehow based on readership and usage?

How many of these accounts are test accounts? How many are inactive? How many were created and then never used or rarely used to post over the previous 2 or 3 years? How many are not Neale Talbot?

I'd love to see some histograms.

The comment preview works kind of weird for me now. When I hit the back button after seeing a comment preview (in IE 5.01), my form is empty. I could have sworn when I built and tested it, this didn't happen.

Is it just me, or is it happening to anyone else? Is anyone getting data in the comment form when they go back?
