Get out of town! April 30, 2010 6:53 AM   Subscribe

Since no one in Boston wants to hire me, I'm heading to New York City to work on a contract for the rest of the year. That means GOING AWAY PARTY! *YAAAAAY!*

I'm thinking Watch City Brewery in Waltham the evening of Saturday the 15th for fewd and brews.

I'm also planning to have some kind of Welcome meetup in NYC, but my first two weekends in the city are actually booked... outside the city (New Hampshire and Georgia respectively). And if it's in June, I might just roll it into my 30th birthday celebration.

Don't know if I'm traveling again that week, but if I'm around I should be able to make it!

I'll be on top of Mt. Washington that night. Sorry!

God help you if this is permanent, Eideteker! *shakes fist*

Oh, come on. You're going to work in, like, Nerd Disneyland :)
posted by Madamina at 8:20 AM on April 30, 2010

Is Watch City the brewery pretty much next to the Waltham commuter rail?
posted by zizzle at 8:54 AM on April 30, 2010

Dammit, how we gonna pwn the next pub trivia meetup? With those other two who were on *Jeopardy*? It won't work, man, we need you and your brain! Maybe just your brain. Tell ya what, FedEx your brain up here if we have another trivia meetup.
posted by not_on_display at 8:58 AM on April 30, 2010

There are pub trivia meetups???

zizzle - yep. It's just over the bridge and up a block on Moody.
Finally! A meetup within walking distance where I can drink to my heart's content (which is actually very little), though it may not work for me because I may or may not be on a train headed north at the time. Poop.
posted by Cat Pie Hurts at 9:05 AM on April 30, 2010

Very cool.

I will put myself down as a maybe + 1.5. I know Dr.E's been wanting to go to there, so maybe this'll be an excuse. And Baby Zizzle does love beer (evidenced by his constantly reaching for his dad's.).
posted by zizzle at 9:20 AM on April 30, 2010

Watch City is about 2 blocks from the Waltham Commuter Rail. I can also arrange to ferry a limited number of people from either the West Newton Commuter Rail stop (if South Station is more convenient) or the Green Line station at Woodland (which is on the D/Riverside line). I'm walking distance from either.
posted by Eideteker at 9:20 AM on April 30, 2010

Count me as a maybe. If I go, I'll be glad to slhlep anyone to Waltham from the 'burbs (Natick, Framingham area) though I think I'm the only Mefite between Rt. 95 and 495.
posted by bondcliff at 10:08 AM on April 30, 2010

I'm definitely be there, being Schmucky and all... Unless I'm out of town too--my job is ending and I'll be taking a vacation.
posted by Schmucko at 10:15 AM on April 30, 2010

Definite maybe. May is über busy for me and I might be hiding under my bed. If not - I'll be there.
posted by grapefruitmoon at 10:21 AM on April 30, 2010

What's a good time for those who can attend? I'm thinking 7pm for those of us who want grub, and anyone who just wants to drink can show up whenever. Howzat?
posted by Eideteker at 11:11 AM on April 30, 2010

Maybe.

I'm about 90% sure I can go. Depends on whether Mr. Explosion has Nerd Stuff going on.

Hm, I might be entertaining a Relative Visiting From The West Coast that night, so a Maybe for me.

Dang it, I'm in DC that weekend. Phoo.
posted by nat at 7:32 PM on April 30, 2010

50/50 for me. Have a going away party for someone else leaving town sometime that weekend, but if there's no schedule conflict I'll be there.
posted by Ryvar at 10:21 AM on May 1, 2010

As of now, Dr.E and I are planning on attending with Baby Zizzle. Baby Zizzle is usually in bed by 7, except when he parties and then he'll continue on with the rest of us. So if we can make it a little earlier, it will help our being able to stay longer. 6:30, okay?

It people prefer later, we may just go early on our own and join forces with the rest of you at the appointed time.

Not sure yet if we're driving or arriving some other way, but if we are driving, we can possibly schlep two people from the Brookline-Allston-Brighton areas.
posted by zizzle at 2:34 PM on May 1, 2010

Booo. Horace Rumpole and I will still be driving me back up from Memphis on the 15th.

(but that does mean PUB TRIVIA MEETUPS in your future, Boston/Cambridge Mefites)
posted by DiscourseMarker at 3:22 PM on May 1, 2010

I would be in for this meetup, and also future pub trivia meetups.
posted by initapplette at 8:20 PM on May 1, 2010

I have no problem with getting there earlier, and staying as late as possible. Can I get a headcount for 6:30? I'd like to reserve a table, and I've got non-MeFi friends coming. I'd also like an idea of who's going to show up later so we're not squeezed out.
posted by Eideteker at 8:28 PM on May 1, 2010

We will be 2 + highchair. So that makes four of us at least, Eideteker.

(Definitely coming now barring anything unforseeable. If you want to Memail me your phone number, I can call you with any last minute changes that might be necessary. One can just never tell with a Baby, but we should be there.)
posted by zizzle at 9:32 AM on May 3, 2010

Definite maybe for me and jessamyn. I bet that helps out for headcounting purposes, kinda like Schroedinger's RSVP or something. We are both vibrating and motionless at the same time.

Okay, I'm making it official. Saturday, May 15th at 6:30pm for food, later for drinks. I appreciate a headcount, at least for the dining portion of the evening, so I can make a reservation. Of course, you're welcome to show up whenever, though we may head to Lizzie's for ice cream at some point, so be forewarned! And bring your ice cream headache medicine.

And if you need transportation from the West Newton station on the Worcester MBCR Line or from the Woodland station on the Green Line, it's first come, first served.
posted by Eideteker at 1:04 PM on May 5, 2010

Put me down for a headcount. I can't think of any *good* reason why I can't go.

Bad reasons:
- Have to wash hair.
- Need to spend quality time with the cat.
- Candidate who can't leave the Island.

posted by grapefruitmoon at 5:50 PM on May 5, 2010

Good reasons: someone needs to distribute the Apples to Apples cards. (That'd be you, moon)
posted by not_on_display at 6:53 PM on May 5, 2010

Ah yes. DEFINITELY there. My Apples to Apples set conveniently lives in my car, so the chances that I will forget it are about 0.

Argh...I'll be in CT! Dangit! Have fun.

Hey! Reconfirmnig 2 + highchair!

Eideteker, if there are any last minute changes, is there a way I can reach you? I imagine we will be there, but babies have the delightful quality of changing plans on you with sickness or super grouchiness.

We may have some friends tagging along as well, so I'll find out from them for sure and add them later as appropriate.

Okay, reservation is made. 6:30pm, under "Nat." Come hungry/thirsty!
posted by Eideteker at 10:07 AM on May 11, 2010

My "maybe a trip" is now "definitely not a trip", so I'll be around! I think I'll come, and I'll see if the girlfriend wants to come, too.
posted by backseatpilot at 11:15 AM on May 11, 2010

Looks like me and jessamyn (not_[not_on_display]) will be joining you as well! We will arrive both hungry and thirsty.

And even so I still can't manage to make it. Phoo. (have a good time, Nat et al.)

Looks like I can actually make this. Please don't tell my mom I put off her birthday dinner in order to hang with internet nerds.

I'll be there for food if you have room at the table.
posted by bondcliff at 4:30 PM on May 13, 2010

I'll be there, Eideteker! Wouldn't miss it. Maybe mr. init too.

We had a great time! Wish we could have stayed longer, but Baby Zizzle was crashing in the car and was begging to be put to bed as soon as we stepped in the door. Nice to see he was both Mefite approved and approved of Mefites. High fives all around!

Great seeing you all (again, in some cases.)

Great to see everyone. Thanks for putting it together, Eiderteker! Best of luck in NYC, you meetup slut, you.

And now, the Inside Joke:

I'm looking forward to welding up a barbecue grill.

Inside joke #2:
Rosemary bread/gravy beer.

I KNOW! I keep missing jessamyn. But in my defense, I couldn't drive. As in, physically couldn't. :( I did not skip the meet-up lightly, but was rather grounded by faulty neurological wiring.

The number of times that this has happened to me when I should have been doing something AWESOME are too numerous to think about without becoming severely depressed.

I'm still upset that jessamyn called me a hipster.
posted by backseatpilot at 7:29 PM on May 16, 2010

initapplet called jessamyn a hipster, when we all know that she is actually a hippie.

Inside joke: Steam, and I don't mean for playing Portal on a Mac.
posted by not_on_display at 8:47 PM on May 16, 2010

I thought this question was decided! Hipster: railroad pants. Hippie: railroad overalls. Therefore: hipster.
posted by initapplette at 9:31 AM on May 17, 2010

Based on the fact that it was universally agreed that backseatpilot was the most hipster-like among us, I've decided that the definition of hipster is "someone younger than me and with a cooler t-shirt."
