is there a policy against linking to disgusting goatse-type webpages in one's profile homepage link?

exhibit a: http://www.metafilter.com/user/17545

and if there isn't - can at least a nsfw warning be placed next to knuckleheads who think this sort of behavior is funny?

im no prude, but damn

Ever since Matt approved goatse.cx for the front page, I've assumed anything is fair game and acted accordingly.

Sounds like a good idea, but how could something like this be policed?

I'm taking your word for it on the link, btw.

oh come on. I think it was worth the laugh.

So as long as someone's laughing, clicker beware.

yes but in your link, mr_crash_davis, the goatse.cx was warned as nsfw

in my example it's not.

some may find this type of thing funny, but at least they knew what sort of territory they were walking into.

how would it be policed? how is anything policed here - someone sees it, bitches, and it gets removed or altered.

"in your link, mr_crash_davis, the goatse.cx was warned as nsfw"

Marginally, actually, but I don't really want to rehash the whole thread again. Like I said, from that point on I just assumed every link was NSFW, so you may wish to do the same, assuming you're browsing from work.

Doesn't that say "clicker beware"? Do you need an accurate description or what?

Now I need a homepage to link to, and all the good ideas are taken.

could the link that says NSFW WITHIN IT please have NSFW posted somewhere near it?

I'm no prude, rocket scientist but damn...

geoff and shmegegge, the link has changed since tsarfan posted this thread. It was originally http://www.blogdar.com/ugotnegams.

Just so's you know.

In terms of policy, it's dangerous to start regulating what people can do with a free space on a website. Once you take action to remove some kind of content, then you become responsible for all content, and anyone with any beef about content someone's posted can take it to you and hold you liable for damages, etc. I think MeFi is in pretty decent shape, or must have had few problems of this sort. There's not much you can do on your user page that you can't do anywhere else. I'm just saying it's a context to keep in mind. Forget outside parties... if Matt steps in to edit one person's user page, the door is wide open to 28K+ other complaints.

Let's try that again.

The original link was to http://www.blogdar.com/ugotnegams, not the current one with the "NSFW" portion.

I dunno for sure, but I think he changed the link to include all that nsfw stuff only after someone told him about this post.

Whoa! That thing takes a lot of batteries!

Actually, after talking to a few people I think there was a jrun problem where adding "nsfw" to a link breaks the href, so this might have been unintentional.

*Quietly removes moift from the xmas card list....*

Don't let's do anything rash... :[

It wasn't marked NSFW before and tsarfan is not crazy or cognitively enfeebled afaik, but now it is and (s)he presumably still isn't. Thanks for helping me correct this oversight.

Well I didn't click on it before. That ranks right up there with horse snuff beastiality video mentioned on Dan Savage a few weeks ago. Thanks for densensitizing me just a little more to sex.

Personally I think that clip is pretty scarily yucky, of the "I'm so glad I'm drinking and not tripping tonight" variety -- that is I'll probably forget it eventually. I do agree that it'd be nice of people gave warnings about things like this.

But I don't suppport banning anybody for stuff like that, or outlawing it from Mefi, or upsetting anybody else over it.

"Ever since Matt approved goatse.cx for the front page"

That's a massive stretch on the outcome of that discussion, as you well know, mr_crash.

If the image had been embedded into the userpage, yeah then I could see that there might be a policy against it. Links outta here tho, whole 'nother story.
