Reminder!! Northern New England Metafilter Gathering: Saturday, September 17th, 5pm, Portland Flatbread Company. 72 Commercial Street, Portland Maine.
You don't have to be from Maine to come and drink with us. Mefites (Mofites, and MeChas) from New Hampshire, Vermont, and even Massachussets are welcome and encouraged to join us!

5 pm?! Is it a school night or something?
Sadly, me and my lady-friend will be busy photographing Mayor Curley's wedding, but send our regards to the Metafilter Moose Members.
And on a completely unrelated note, I recently learned about a strange, mythical-sounding creature that frequents my area called the fisher cat. What the fuck is up with those things?

I thought it might be nice to actually be able to get a table.
Plus, if people are driving an hour or more, I'd like them to be able to get home at a non-stupid hour.

Sorry, you're a bit too far for me. Have fun!
C_D: A neighbor saw a fisher on their deck and called the neighbors to close the windows. Apparently her sister had a cat that was taken by a fisher through a screened window!

I knew Portland would be far, but I'm looking at the map and I'm not even sure how I'd get over there! (without going through Boston) Plus, it really shows just how far north we are -- now I feel even lonelier. sniff sniff

I saw one (well, either that or a small bear) at the beginning of Spring this year, and when I asked a neighbor about it, they had a similar anecdote: apparently they are notorious cat-killers. Luckily my two are indoor-only (save for the occasional jail-break).
And evening: yeah, the whole east-west thing in New England wasn't done very well. North-south, no problem.

The best route I know of from Burlington to Portland (YMMY, obviously) is 89 south to Route 10/11 South (pick up near Enfield/Lebanon NH), to 93 S (pick up in Concord, Bowe) to 101 East (Manchester to Portsmouth), then I-95 North from Portsmouth to Portland.
That route is about 250 miles.
The more direct route is to take Route 2 East and then pick up Route 302 in Montpelier, then take Route 302 East overland, through Crawfords Notch, into Maine at Fryeburg, then on into Portland. This route is shorter, more scenic, but might take longer since its not a 55 mph highway.

evening, we can do a foliage meetup later on, I have a few mefi friends who moved closer so there might actually be more than just the two of us.

Good idea, jessamyn. Foliage is a great excuse, too :)
Thanks for the directions, anastasiav. I'll keep them for when we finally go to Maine.

Bummer, I can't make it either. Maybe next time. I'll share my 'in the woods in pitch darkness, no flashlight, being stalked by TWO fisher cats' story. Ever hear those critters scream? My shorts are still messed!

I was sort-of planning on this -- but hope enough people will be able to make it to justify the trip.

I was greatly looking forward to this, but my father is in the hospital and I need to be with him. I’m counting on you all to drink a beer for me.

Well, this is kinda embarassing, but...
This was my idea, but regret to say that I cannot attend. I'm sick, and definitely contagious. I love you all enough not to share what I have with you. I hope there is some fun had, but sadly without me.
I'm going back to bed now.....
