Not sure if this has been done yet, but: I'd like to thank all you MeFi-type-persons for all you've done for those of us displaced by Katrina. I know the relief fund helped me out quite a bit. Kudos, folks. Kudos. You're good people. I don't care what anybody else says.

Hey brundlefly. I'm glad it worked out for you. And, this is a little reminder that we still have funds for those who could use it (and more promised, should we have a need). If you were directly affected by Katrina (or Rita, for that matter) or are hosting someone, please let us know. We would love to help you get back on your feet. I've emailed dozens of people in that area, but the db isn't set up for zip code search, so it's been a slow job after the inital rush of members with easily-identifiable names/zips. If anyone knows a member I may have missed (just shoot me an email so I can double-check), I'd be grateful if you'd let me know.

I've been working with some others who are either down there now or going down soon. If we don't find more MeFi members who could use the help, we can either a) sponsor a family directly through connections, b) make a large donation to the Red Cross, Modest Needs, or another non-profit, or c) set up some kind of MeFi emergency fund as seed for future catastrophes like this. I like a+c better than b, but I'll be emailing all the donors to poll for ideas and preferences.

I thank you for telling us your story and helping us close our distance from the event. Your openness about sharing and your openness to your adopted home here in the East Bay were both inspiring.

I say setup a future catastrophy fund, although I can see some downsides to that...

Well under normal circumstances I am very happy whenever someone moves here, as I think of my home as the best place ever and am always thrilled to 'welcome someone to paradise.' That would be presumptuous in your case, since you didn't move here by choice. But still, I hope you find it a good place to land and make yourself a regular at meetups.

Er, what have they been saying to the contrary?

scarabic: I'm digging it so far!
orange swan: You don't want to know.
