Scary Post Contest October 22, 2005 11:05 AM   Subscribe

Now that the other contest is over, and since we're building up to Halloween, what sort of contest can we come up with to encourage 11 days of the creepiest/scariest posts ever?

creepiest/scariest posts ever

Perhaps just offer free user accounts to NAMBLA and Cre@tivity Movement members?

Sorry, do I get five demerits for starting this thread on a sarcastically obtuse note?

MetaTalk has been creeping me out quite enough recently, thank you very much.

Remove the Goatse.cx prohibition.

Isn't "creepiest/scariest post" a bit too subjective to reach a conclusion on? I mean, I'm deeply terrified of bichon frises, to the point where panic sets in when I'm forced to walk through the neighbourhood retirement community, so a post all about bichon frises would totally get my vote for "scariest/creepiest". But others might not see it that way.

How about not encouraging them at all? I'm already heartily sick of seeing halloween crap all over the place, and it's not for another nine days. Why does every one-day "event" (for want of a better term) have to be dragged out into a weeks-long commercial feeding frenzy? Oh, I'm sorry, I'm robbing the stores of their thoroughly deserved money being a killjoy.

There's christmas-related products in the stores already. WTF?

"creepiest/scariest posts ever"

I guess quonsar posting again just isn't enough for some people. ;-P

I'm going to have to go ahead and ask that no one post any of those flash sites where you stare at something for 30 seconds and then BAM! you get a close up shot of that nasty girl's face from The Ring.

but other than that, I think this is a good idea.

buxtonbluecat : "Why does every one-day 'event' (for want of a better term) have to be dragged out into a weeks-long commercial feeding frenzy?"

Wait, we're going to do Halloween stuff and sell stuff? Because unless money changes hands, I don't think doing Halloween stuff on MeFi could be considered a "commercial feeding frenzy". If anything, it would be more like a "Take Back The Night" for the holiday: Halloween stuff for no monetary reason!

Somehow, I get the feeling you want whimsical-spooky posts, like a flash file of dancing skeletons in top hats. The Internets are no slouch when it comes to the truly macabre and disgusting, and I really doubt people would want to be subjected to a week of rotten.com-esque links. Also, those shock-horror links (like shmegegge mentions) are no fun either.

Better contest: find the hammerblog.

jenovus, actually I was inspired by how much fun I had as a result of this thread a few years back. (It was a quiet phone-duty day, so I got to read a bunch of the stories. Eleven days of that would be awesome!)

what sort of contest can we come up with to encourage 11 days of the creepiest/scariest posts ever?

How about: Send us a creepy post by midnight, Oct. 31 or we will hunt you down and force you to drink a can of Steven Seagal Juice.

5. I don't know that frequent contests are really the best way to encourage quality posts on metafilter, but i realize the idea itself was presented with good intentions, and I don't mean to appear dismissive or otherwise antagonistic towards the idea's originator or anyone else who thinks this sort of thing is a good idea.
6. suck it.

That someone likes this idea is disturbing enough for me.

darukaru, you are what's wrong with MetaFilter.

I, for one, would welcome our new Den Beste overlord.

Seriously. MeFi is a pretty lonely place for those of a certain ideological persuasion, and if Steven returned, our ranks would...well, not quite double, but you get the idea.

And we could start ripping you lots of new ones. Cool!

Not sure if the server could take SDB & EB both waffling away full-throttle but could be handy for insomniacs...
