"thread tracking" eventually "recent activity"

I know that this would require a lot of coding, Matt, but I would literally pay for a "thread tracking" feature. (more in comments)

That is, each thread would have a "Watch this thread!" link, and the front page would contain a sidebar/panel/etc. listing those threads and the number of comments on them -- or better yet, the number of comments since the user's last post. I comment on numerous threads, and have trouble remembering which ones I want to catch up on. Also, this would make threads "last longer," since special-interest topics that interest only a few people for a long period of time (such as the one on Interactive Fiction) would be easy to find after they scrolled off the main page.

Since this would be a pretty damn complicated feature, if I were Matt I'd offer it to paying users -- and yes, I'd pay for this feature. "Metafilter Premium!" Heh. And IMHO, it would make MeFi that much more of a dynamic forum.

Discussed fairly recently here. But it bears discussing again, especially as fooljay hasn't answered my email requesting access to the cool thingy he's working on.

He set me up with it when that thread was going on, and it's a nice little tool, as far as it's implemented. There are several features that simply don't work, and aren't explained, but it appears you'll be able to share threads and such.
A few bugs, but once it's cleaned up, should be great.

It's super great.

But he hasn't been on MeFi of late. He's probably attending to some crap like "life" or something ridiculous like that ;-)
