MeFi Lite? October 5, 2001 12:01 PM   Subscribe

I'm currently visiting metafilter with my images turned off in the hope that it will reduce server load just a little. does it?

along the same line of thought, matt, an version of metafilter until server problems are resolved? ala emergency CNN? would it make a difference?

(cough) an *image-free* version of metafilter.

<sigh> I guess a goob-free version of metafilter would go a long way all by itself....

Well, I was working on this, which I hope to have at lofi.metafilter.com soon (and all subpages will be text-only).

I *really* like how that looks (but you know *my* aesthetic. :) I'm going to use that if it will just be there.

Love that lofi.

Nice, I like it. Will it help on the server load?

Matt, I think that looks fine. One request: Please don't hardwire the font size. I use 1920*1440 on a 21" screen, and it looks really tiny and hard for my ancient eyes to read. (I need new glasses.)

oh my gosh that is so lovely. Can't you just make it the default and then have people choose "bandwidth hogging green and blue power combo" in their preferences?

Ignore this if you're still working on it Matt, but I noticed that I'm logged in and have the "login" option. There's no "logout". I think it looks great, btw...Mefi could use a change!

Interesting idea, Rebecca.
The lofi version is actually pretty nice. I'd use it. Just one request, though. If the font's going to be that small, table or DIV it in some so it's not quite so wall-to-wall. It's hard to track on the lines. Then again, it's still in progress, so you may just not have gotten there.

Matt. Thanks! You may not realise it but trying to browse MeFi on a 9.6kps GSM connection into your Psion series 7 is frustrating! Although easier than most sites.

Just a quick notice but you seem to do cool low bandwidth sites e.g. Blogger Wireless. Ever thought about mobile device stuff? It's cooler than you think...

I'm definitely for the lofi (but I think my aesthetic is even more minimalistic than Rebecca's). You might want to consider making the links larger so they are easier to hover over & click, but I guess I have that minor issue with the hifi-mefi too.

I like the PDA idea. Sometimes I download metatalk on my palm via Avantgo to read on the subway in the morning.

*sobs at lack of #336699 on lofi, suggests mimimalist aesthetic is way too 90's, and proposes large animated gifs and 2 Mb flash animations saying LOSER that appear whenever a thread receives less than 3 comments : is promptly banned*

->also sobs at lack of #336699 - would it be too much to ask?

but otherwise disavows the rest of stwc's post.

maybe #336699 as the 'MetaFilter' logo text colour?
posted by nedrichards at 12:59 PM on October 8, 2001

Couldn't you get #336699 with all the trimmings (proper link, text colours, etc.), without really affecting server load? Isn't it just a body tag?

Oy, nedrichards, NO!

If anyone were to make (shiver) a WAP version of MeFi it would suck my life away, I'd miss all my buses, and my phone bill would be larger than the GDP of Finland.

Stop the madness.
