Self-Flagging December 14, 2005 12:48 AM Subscribe
Should I be able to flag my own posts? Because I just flagged all of them as Fantastic! (kidding, I just did one to test it). Am I making much ado about nothing?
Am I making much ado about nothing?
As usual, the answer is a resounding yes.

You'd like to think there was some kind of a mechanism for blocking people from applying flags to their own posts or comments.
I can think of three ways to deal with that:
1 - Display the comment flag link only if the comment isn't from the currently logged-in user (my preference)
2 - Register the comment only if the comment isn't from the currently logged-in user (might be less work, but results in threads like this)
3 - massage the data post facto
(Actually, being the occasionally anal retentive requirements geek that I occasionally get paid to be, I'd "prefer" both 1 and 2. But from a data integrity standpoint, 2 is actually better than 1. I like 1 better because it makes the user experience more consistent.)

actually, sometimes it's a good idea for people to flag their own posts. If you accidentally post something twice, you can flag it and me or mathowie can remove it. The "fantastic post" queue isn't so huge that it wouldn't be pretty obvious if you were flagging all of your posts as fantastic.

If I Had An Anus: 1 will prolly kick JRun's ass.Um... shouldn't! I mean, if you're writing a page, and selectively displaying elements already, then you know the usernumber. It should be a simple check against a value you already have. Same thing with 2. 2 has the advantage of being able to screen out any inapplicable values. E.g., you could register "delete" or "double", but not "fantastic."

Each time you flag your own post, Matt notches a short-timer stick. When he runs out of room, you get banninated.
