didn't want to get beaten senseless for two same-day front page pasts at MeFi so it goes here. GoTo has just announced their first profitable quarter and a name change. after this recent thread disucssing the merits of Altavista, i thought i would stir the pot a bit. GoTo profitable? i always thought you couldn't polish a turd. not only have they managed to polish their turd, they are selling it.....?

I think you're defeating the purpose of not posting something twice. If it's a good link people don't care if the person posted every link that day. I'd take this discussion to metatalk... but well...

Why not post this within the AltaVista thread if it's related?

I mean, if you want to stir a pot, shouldn't you actually put the spoon into the pot?

that thread was so old i didn't think anyone would get around to reading it. i know i have trouble keeping up with the volume these days.

GoTo (which changed its name by the way, to Overture) makes money because they have a product to sell, which are search results. Any large or small business can get instant targetted traffic by buying search results from Overture.

I usually check in on threads I'm really interested in for at least a couple of days. The Altavista thread was 13 hours old when you made this post, if I'm reading correctly. I realize MetaFilter is like a powerful locomotive these days, but surely a same-day thread can't be considered old?
