Why is an answer in AskMe deleted when it contains an informative comment, followed by some humor?

This seems a tad unfair, since lots of comments are not deleted which contain exactly the same mix of a comment, followed by humor.

I'd link to my answer, but I don't know where it is.....Here's the question.

How do I know who's deleted my comment? Appeals? How does one gain such Godlike powers?
Also: is there a place to find deleted comments on AskMe so at least I can save my late night ramblings

Lalochezia, stop reading now and never return to this thread. I advise you as a friend.

Well, you could check this thread from yesterday. Or this thread from five days ago. Or this thread from six days ago. Or this clusterfuck of a thread from a week ago. This comes up, you know, every once in awhile.

lalochezia - the moderators email folks when their comment is deleted - as you've not provided your email in your profile, they couldn't inform you. It's usually jessamyn who handles AskMe moderation.
posted by tristeza at 2:04 PM on January 26, 2006

It was deleted by mathowie or jessamyn. No appeal process. You gain Godlike powers by virtue of it being your site or being Jessamyn.

And no, there's no way to find deleted comments, they're removed from the database. Your best bet would be to save your comments in Notepad, just in case. Or, you know, not crack wise in AskMe, whichever.

There were a couple dumb comments joking about eating a bunch of chocolate that weren't answers to the question, and were removed.

Check out this bastard being funny in an AskMe thread. And he didn't even wait until there were lots of answers!

Good thing the question-asker laughed, or now that it's been brought to everyone's attention, it just might get deleted.

In response to a dumb question about eating a bunch of chocolate? What are people thinking?

Hrm. Just for the record, I never received any emails when my AskMeFi comment was deleted. It just vanished.
Which sucked, because i actually went back to look for it to give the link to somebody else, and it was gone.

Oh well.

lalochezia : "I'm a newbie.....purleese be gentle. But sometimes I like it rough awaits comment deletion in 3....2....1...."

Nah, you still don't get it - you're not allowed to be a non-useful smart-ass in an AskMe thread. In Meta almost anything goes - it is quite rare (compared to the Green or the Blue) to see comments deleted here.

That said, I have a small question: why isn't the email address people enter when creating a new user saved for admin use (as when the said newbie has a comment deleted in AskMe) and the user has the option to make that address public or not?
posted by nkyad at 3:12 PM on January 26, 2006

It is- when I had a comment deleted in AskMe I got an email, and there's no address visible on my profile.

Maybe I'm just one of the cool kids...

Nah.

I was on planes, busses and cars all day so missed this thread earlier, but I wanted to add a few notes about AskMe comments. Usually but not always when a comment is removed from AskMe, I'll drop someone an email about it if I think it would be helpful to them (new users, people who seem unclear on the concept, among others). Sometimes people email back and say "that's not helpful, quit doing it" so I try to use some discretion. Even if you don't have an email in your profile, I can email you at the address you signed up with. This wasn't true in the past for me, which is why I used to harp on people having email addresses in their profiles, which I stil think is a good idea for other reasons.

When mathowie removes comments from AskMe, or elsewhere, he usually doesn't email folks. He's busier than me, removes AskMe comments more rarely since he usually moderates MetaTalk and MeFi proper, and just has a different style. You can always email or IM either one of us to ask about a removed comment or thread, or posting here is fine also.

Give us this pony, please, for the love of god: if someone who has recently joined the site attempts to make their first post to MetaTalk, force them to view a page with the following set in huge bold, perhaps even blinking type: "The admins are mathowie and jessamyn. The '.' is an expression of woe. Before you post your question, have you searched MetaTalk to see if it has been asked before, or looked at the MeFi Wiki? If your post or comment was deleted, it most probably broke the guidlines, and even if it didn't, there's nothing you can do about it now."

Admittedly, I knew to do all this, and my first MeTa post was still a bit dim. Hey ho.

perhaps we should deleted everyone's first post/question/comment, and if they don't cry about it, they can stay.
posted by tiamat at 6:56 PM on January 26, 2006

I would like to ask that the admins stop answering this every time it comes up. I would like to ask that as soon as one of these posts is made, that the last comment in the thread (preferably a very short thread, resultantly) be an admin saying "this has been answered before in many places. Here is one." with maybe a link and then the thread be closed. either that or don't say anything and allow us to pile on with as much vicious ferocity as can be mustered. I'm fine either way.

Kudos to lalo for having a sense of humor.

10 second summary for you since glancing real quick over this thread I don't see it mentioned: in general AskMe's tightly moderated to create a culture of usefulness. It works, and let the comedian beware. Metafilter tends to get moderated significantly less - you have to go out of your way to get a comment deleted there, and MetaTalk least of all - although entire threads on MetaTalk have a way of dying violently.

A better thing would a weeklong probationary period where new members would be automatically redirected (and confined) to MeTa when they login. No commentin' for a week, no participatin' in MeFi, no questionin' or answerin' in AskMe, just tie 'em to a chair for a week with a ballgag in their yaps and force them to read MeTa for seven days. They'll learn a hawk from a handsaw in about three days, and by the seventh they'll be able to pull an Abrams tank with their testicles.

And if they ain't got none, they'll grow 'em.

monju_bosatsu: "drstein, it would help if you had an email address in your profile."

Maybe an email address in the profile should be required. It seems like three-quarters six sevenths ninety-eight percent of the MeTa threads could be eliminated if #1 and #J were able to always send emails to idiots people who posted inappropriately in AskMe. A dropdown that said "Available to: Administrators only, All Mefi users, The whole of civilization" would then be good.

Says the all-powerful Jessamyn:

So, not *really* required anymore. Matt just didn't bother emailing anyone in that particular thread.
