I think I've seen that before, but I don't know if it was in an FPP or another comment.

A cursory search (which I would have done were I to post it, I swear) reveals that I found the link in someone else's FPP anyhow.
This particular instance aside, is it kosher to post a link as an FPP if it gets a positive response in a thread?

anjamu: the jokers here are pulling your leg. Reposting any link that has ever appeared on Metafilter before - whether as a comment, on a user page, or of course in an FPP - is grounds for immediate IP ban. Where possible, your employer will be notified as well, and in some cases people have had their wages garnished as a result.

Do a search on Critical Mass, Lotto. Every single such thread is a massive trainwreck.

If the comment was in a recent FPP it would have to be pretty worthwhile standing on its own to merit its own post. If there is currently a post on the front page of MeFi that is on the same general topic, then starting a new thread isn't usually a good idea. Hot button topics like the ones people have mentioned and a few more -- gun control, Israel/Palestine, childbearing and drugs -- should probably go through an extra stage of personal review along the lines of "Even though my link has good information presentend reasonably, is there any chance that a MeFi thread on this topic will NOT become a huge messy flamewar shitstorm?" If the answer is yes, then you might want to try it.

Aren't links always supposed to be worthwhile standing on their own? My understanding is that it's irrelevant whether they'd been presented in comments (the theory presumably being that while everyone can be expected to scan the front page, no one can be reasonably expected to read all the comments to every thread, so most people won't have seen it). I should have been clearer. I mean recent like "last two or three days" not recent like "last month or two". There is no policy against doing this. However, if there is a raging CIA scandal thread on the front page and you want the CIA scandal link you provided in your comment to get more attention so you post it to its own thread, there is a chance of it being considered just an updatefilter post.
Posts like this have sometimes been removed with the suggestion "post this in the already open CIA scandal thread still on the front page" so it might be worth noting somehow in the post that some other version of this topic is also being discussed.

So I posted a link as part of the [more inside] part of an FPP with many links, so it may not have been noticed. It's a really interesting conference on the future of tech/ai/robotics etc. 'Will Spiritual Robots Replace Humanity By 2100?', though it is a couple of years old.
Any thoughts on if it is worth giving it it's own post (presumably with some supporting links), as it seems like something peoples may enjoy.
