Pony: not-the-best-of-the-web flag June 1, 2006 1:44 PM Subscribe
May we have a "not the best of the web" flag?
Doesn't "not the best of the web" fall under "It breaks the guidelines"?
Flagging this post.

"not the best of the web" flag
What would having it accomplish?

I like this idea. But didn't the "best of the web" thing get officially deprecated about three years ago? I mean we seriously don't think the heart of MeFi is still "best of the web" do we?
Personally I wish we did. But I think that boat sailed long ago.

What y6y6y6 said. "Best of the web" used to be a phrase found on the posting page. Several years ago, Matt removed that phrase, and now simply asks, "Find something cool on the web?" "Best of the web" is no longer part of any of the guidelines.
Nonetheless, I wouldn't mind having a "this is crap" flag. For now I use "noise."

I'd like to see a "post has minor errors" flag, to alert jessowie to come by and clean up a typo or fumbled link.

While you're at it, I propose a flag for each country.. you know.. so I can stick the flag of my home country in each post I read...

The problem with a "this is crap" flag is that *everything* would get flagged. One key to MeFi's success is that we as a community have zero agreement about what is crap, yet we can sit down together and talk about anything.
Inviting us to flag things we think are crap would be a waste of time. Over and over I see that one person's crap is another person's [this is good].

Are we having this conversation again? Good!
Mandatory tagging is what we need, from a finite list of approved tags, along with a feature that allows user customization of what they want to view. My MetaFilter would be mostly arts and culture, plus science and tech. Your Metafilter might be news and politics. Or old-school unfiltered if you prefer. Give everyone the Metafilter they want.

You're right, y6y6y6, a "crap" flag does open a door Matt probably wants to leave shut.

i ask that you all abide by the guidelines during this discussion.
i'll set the example:
i attempted to register my disgust with this feature request by means of a combo box on a linked page, but the bits of memory holding the value of said combo box must have been flagged as noise by my system's memory controller, because there was an error when i hit "send".

Agreeing with y6y6y6 but flagging it "crap" anyway because I'm put out that he said it first.

What iconomy said, but in a slightly deeper voice. I thought it was reasonably obvious that flagging is just a measure that Matt and Jessamyn glance at to see trends. Personally, the very occasional times I flag, I use 'noise'. Isn't 'worst of the web' noise? Don't you think that M & J just approach things as good/bad/better-take-a-look? A flag is not a unique snowflake. I think the many flag categories we have now are just appeasements but I'd be really surprised if they were used in any other way than as mere trendspotters.

I tend to flag shit posts posts I don't like as 'it breaks the guidelines' on the grounds that I assume it's the very naughtiest of infractions, and therefore most likely to catch the stern eye of The Jessowie.
