Who favorited me? June 9, 2006 8:14 PM   Subscribe

It would be nice to be able to tell how many of my own comments or threads have been marked as favorites by other users.

...and, of course, to be able to tell which comments and threads those were.

I was thinking the same thing. Having them at the top of the FPP was distracting, but it'd still be nice to have them sorted by thread (not just by flagger). /2ยข

Yeah, I don't mean to suggest that I liked it when everyone who had marked as favorite was listed at the top of the thread. I'm just saying...for example, someone noted that they had marked one of my comments as favorite. And it occurred to me that otherwise I never would have known that. Maybe this is info could be available from user pages, e.g. "Click here to see comments and threads by this user that others have marked as favorite."

Maybe we could get a little gold star on each comment of ours that is marked as a favorite. If we get enough gold stars we could trade them in for a certificiate, or maybe a gumball. That part still needs a bit of work, but I'm sure we can work it out.

I could put that in your comment history and post history pages.

That would be cool.

What would be even cooler is if the user page said something like:

bingo has contributed 10 "best answers," 3 comments marked "favorite" and one thread marked "favorite."

And then the viewer could click and easily see those favorites and best answers, without having to scroll through my whole history.

I wish I'd thought of that the other day.

Sounds like we are getting dangerously close to "karma points"....

what's dangerous about karma points is negative karma ... not too many people are going to whine about being ignored ... but zap them with a -1 and all hell breaks loose

Would it be so bad to do this with all the flags? "Derail" and "noise," especially.
posted by anotherpanacea at 7:25 AM on June 10, 2006

There is no negative karma in what I'm talking about; only positive. If we're all more motivated to make contributions good enough to be marked as favorite and best answer, the content of the site in general will be better.

I don't think that showing the number of flagged comments would have the same value. Because then, people would start flagging comments explicitly for the purpose of having their feedback show up on a user page. I think it's much better for that feedback to be indirect; if a reader marks an answer best, or a comment or thread favorite, then that decision is going to stay visible in their own profile, which means that they're not as likely to make that decision whimsically.

i realize that ... which is why it could work ... we really have to stay away from anything that could look like a community dumping on certain individuals ... i've seen it happen at other sites and the result is not pretty ... so, no, i wouldn't publically count totals of "derail" and "noise" flags ... it'll only start trouble

You mean MeTa pile-ons? Yeah, we do a good job avoiding those.

I love you, anotherpanacea! *jump* *pounce* oh wait, not that kind of pile-on?
