I'm going to break the rules, hehe.

That wasn't extremely cunning of him.

I thought of posting "well, the 2 questions aren't even related, and is it so hard to wait one week to post your 2nd question?" but if I had posted that, would my post have gotten deleted as snarky?

I realize there may be reasons this cannot be Official Policy(tm), but idiots like this need to be stamped out, period. Not just because they flout the guidelines, but because they collectively lower the quality of answers. In any sizeable group of humans ignorance is an additive property.

You get as good as you give, or some such platitude. His first question was phrased politely so I'm not sure why the need for this "gonna cheat...hehe" or how he thought that would be recieved.

I agree with Ryvar.

I'm new to MeTalk, but not to AskMe... Is there a way to find out if a thread I've posted in the past has been linked to on MeTalk? It would be useful to know if I've made some faux pas and didn't know about it.

Just read Metatalk.

I tend to agree. I'd probably find a polite way to phrase the Reason For Deletion™ if I were an admin, but I think deleting questions that read like AIM chatter is probably in the best interest of AskMe.

I used to think it was standard procedure to link to the MetaTalk post if you had a complaint (or comment or question) about something on Metafilter or Ask Metafilter. But no.
Would be nice if the MetaTalk posting form included language like "If this is about a recent post to Metafilter or Ask Metafilter, be sure to link from the post you're talking about."
That being said, thanks to loquax for linking to MeTa when bigmusic didn't bother to.

well, the 2 questions aren't even related, and is it so hard to wait one week to post your 2nd question?

What do you mean? Clearly the poster wants to code their own demo, complete with sound. The two seem intrinsicly related to me. In fact, if he/she had just combined it into a compound sentence, there probably would never had been this thread. Something like, "I'm interested in making my own demos. Can someone please point me to a good site with example code, including code for MP3 playback? The lower the filesize, the better!"

but if I had posted that, would my post have gotten deleted as snarky?

I hope so.

Which is why I (failed to answer) answered the question.

I don't know any demo-related sites these days, nor have I even run a demo since 286/386 or maybe 486 days. But a little background information and keywords can go a long way, even from a layman/armchair dork. (Hivemind and all that.)

Doesn't anyone just flag stuff and then wait for Matt and Jess to do their thing? Why do so many members feel the need to bring every post and comment they object to here to MetaTalk? Huh? HUH?

Or, uh....flag it and move on.

Oh, you just live on the edge, don't you?

When I first saw it, they looked like two unrelated questions. See, I read the second part as the smallest audio player... as in an iPod shuffle or something. Hardware. But on further reading, it's clear they're both demo related.

(Although a good answer to the first one would give him a better forum for the 2nd.)

hm, how exactly are graphics demos and audio players related? The poster even said "the 2 werent asked in relation to each other".
posted by puke & cry at 10:52 AM on June 27, 2006

He's talking about making a graphics demo with sound, that's why.

He possibly doesn't realize that these things weren't really using off the shelf apps - but were lovingly handcrafted ones.

This might be an example of someone not knowing how to ask the question because they're approaching the problem from the wrong way or without enough specific knowledge to properly formulate the question, but through interpretation one can still answer the question - providing you unrelenting autonomous snarkbots don't go all smashity-smash all over it like a pack of rabidly shit-foamy death weasels.

Just because someone doesn't know how to ask the question properly doesn't mean it can't be a valuable question. Com'on, now. We're supposed to be smartypantses and friendly, not the haughty oracle requiring supplication.

Are you - the generalized "you" as in all of you - on AskMe to answer questions? Are you on AskMe to learn and teach?

Or are you there to practice sexually deviant forms of Vogon bureaucracy?

No, he's not. Read his response. I don't know how to make that any clearer.

Oh, right. Nevermind. I just read his in-thread update.

Please read him a few selections from my summer collection of Cyclic Paradiddle Serials Inspired by the Reeking Fungus That Grows in my Flab Rolls, Volume 24.
