Windows configuration problem October 25, 2001 4:02 PM   Subscribe

I'm having a computer (Probably Windows) configuration problem and it's getting me down. Maybe some of you can help. Since this is my work computer and I mostly use it for cruising MetaFilter, I'd say it's a highly appropriate topic. (more inside)

I downgraded from Windows ME to Windows 98 a few months ago because I couldn't do some VB stuff I had to be able to do for teaching. That fixed that, but now Shockwave WILL NOT WORK on any browser. I tried Miguel's Hit the Bunny link and I can't get Shockwave to run. It just does nothing. Any brilliant ideas?
I just teach computers, it's not like I know much about them :)

Macromedia answers the question: How do I fix almost all Shockwave Player issues?

Summary: Uninstall Shockwave and Flash; upgrade browser to latest version; reinstall Shockwave and Flash.

Not pretty but it just might work.

um, I don't think it's appropriate. The "general weblog-related" category isn't here for basic tech support.

Have you tried searching google and groups.google.com (usenet) for "shockwave 8.5 win98 errors" or something similar?

Sorry matt,
I've tried everything from the Macromedia site and google (hours and hours) and since Metafilter and the games (I love that Lego one) that come with it are the only reason that this self-torture comes up, I thought it was at least vaguely related. I certainly didn't want to put it on the front page, although I'm sure I could have found a link and then worked it in under "Discuss". (That's a joke.)
It's not basic tech support, basically, and I'm hoping someone else has faced this. Hey, I discovered Opera through this site...

Don't worry, Matt will shortly develop a new MeFi feature called "TechAds" that will allow you to pay a fee to place your tech-support question in small boxes alongside appropriately-themed threads.

Thanks dhartung. But would I get my money's worth?
