Niche feature for three people

Hey, we just implemented the Windows 8.1 "live tiles" feature for the main MetaFilter site, but since I don't know anyone with Win8.1, I can't really test it. If someone with Win8.1 could test it, screenshot it, and let us know if it works? [more inside]

Immediate derail material

This is a way that many posts about independent games tend to go, where it is almost immediately sidetracked in to a discussion about Windows vs. everything else. Part of the solution is probably to put a windows only notification on the post, and part of the solution is probably just to move on without commenting if you're a mac user.

MetaFilter Maid Service

AskMe gets a lot of questions about which software to use to clean a Windows PC. Anyone have a particularly good one bookmarked? [more inside]

New Windows are the Worse Thing Ever

Why does the "random" link on the Blue open a new window? Why can't it behave like all the other links in the nav bar? [more inside]

Nice work, deezil.

deezil has an excellent spyware removal/virus removal guide in his profile. Are there other members with similarly useful content?

"Competitor" ethics

I'd appreciate the mods' take (and of course that of other users more experienced than myself, which is just about everybody) on the ethics of linking to another forum in answer to an AskMeFi. [more inside]

Nostalgia for blue and green

What happened to the Mefi blue and the green on my Acer Aspire one netbook? All I see is white. [more inside]

Mac Envy / Windows Envy / Eliminating Envy is a Step to Buddha-Nature

From this to this - when Windows people are left out it's justified, when Mac users are left out it's a tragedy that must be addressed. Note: tongue firmly in cheek, I know these are two different users. I'm just feeling snarky.

New Search Box on Blue / Horizontal Scroll Bar

The "Google Custom Search" box on the blue is causing a horizontal scroll bar to appear in Firefox/Windows. The input box is just too darn large. I'd guess 100 pixels or so too wide?

Ajax Favoriting in Opera

Favoriting on the blue has stopped working with Opera on Windows XP. Works fine on all other sites.

New windows launch on clicking very boring link

I have metafilter set to open all links in a new window so I can enjoy sweet, sweet linkage while still keeping my wholesome metafilter goodness. It's very, very convenient. However, just now I was posting to the blue and when I deleted my كشري tag (I guess Arabic support is out of the question?) clicking on the [x] spawned a new window. It probably shouldn't do that, since most similar links (adding favorites, top nav, pretty much anything other than a link in a post or comment) don't.

AskMe thread about useful software for troubleshooting

There was an AskMe thread today about essential software to take on tech support calls to loved ones' computers over the holidays. It got deleted, I assume because the question's been asked and answered a couple of times. (+)

Firefox Bugs

I've switched to Firefox. I have my MeFi preferences set to open links in a new window. I have the Tabbrowser Preferences extension installed on firefox and everything set to open in new tabs, links on metafilter still bring up new windows. While I can just CTRL + click to open in a new tab, I'm wondering if this is a mozilla thing, or a mefi thing. Thanks.

I changed the way new/same window targetting is done

I changed the way new/same window targetting is done, so if you have your preferences set to "open links in a new window" and links internal to metafilter are spawning new windows, let me know and I'll fix them. Only links within posts, comments and on the front page should lead to new windows, everything else should stay the same.

Problem opening MeTa links in a new window in IE6.

IE6, running on Win98SE. I have "open links in a new window" selected in my profile customization, but they open in the same window anyway.

Windows configuration problem

I'm having a computer (Probably Windows) configuration problem and it's getting me down. Maybe some of you can help. Since this is my work computer and I mostly use it for cruising MetaFilter, I'd say it's a highly appropriate topic. (more inside)
