Bush, iraq, israel, Scientology, mp3 and OneHandClapping? What the fuck, blue_beetle? posted by mediareport at 10:32 PM on August 6, 2006
Yeah, that's stupid. Way to make a dumb joke and fuck up the tag system. posted by bob sarabia at 10:34 PM on August 6, 2006
In what context could the tag "MisleadingTags" be misused and fuck up the tag system? It seems to be working okay. posted by Blazecock Pileon at 10:51 PM on August 6, 2006
You mean the tag system isn't a joke? I mean, did we ever settle on "colbert" "stephencolbert" "stephentcolbert" or "stephentruthcolbert"? Or "fred"? posted by mischief at 10:52 PM on August 6, 2006
I found the tags to be funny (with the punchline of "misleading tags") and very much in the spirit of the reviews linked. But just because it made me laugh doesn't make it useful to the community.
Just voicing this so that if they get deleted, blue_beetle will know it had the intended effect and all parties will be happy. posted by Brainy at 10:55 PM on August 6, 2006
Blazecock, the "MisleadingTags" tag is icing; the Bush, iraq, israel, etc. tags are the deeper issue. And mischief, haha and all, but while there's plenty about the tag system I'd change if it was my site, you get what I mean just fine: given the imperfections in the system, there's no reason to deliberately fuck with it in ways designed to add noise to future tag searches.

We have tag searches? posted by mischief at 11:14 PM on August 6, 2006
Oh wah wah wah. It's not like everyone is doing it. posted by reklaw at 3:01 AM on August 7, 2006
I'm with you, mediareport - this is one of my pet peeves, but it is a losing battle to complain about it. People who don't value tags think that none of us should. Do what I do. Make a little voodoo effigies of the tag-abusing posters and stick pins in them. posted by madamjujujive at 5:20 AM on August 7, 2006
quonsar got himself a timeout for tagging all of his posts with "quonsar." Don't mess with the tags. posted by caddis at 6:34 AM on August 7, 2006
NotBush, NotIsrael, NotScientology...cute, very cute.

You gotta type /tags/blah into the URL? To hell with that! posted by mischief at 11:31 AM on August 7, 2006
As long as we're talkin' tags, the tag page (for example, MisleadingTags) contains the text "Please check out the list of all available tags." But shouldn't it read "Please check out the list of all tags used to date"? I mean, "all available tags" would be a list of all the "words" you could create with a standard keyboard. posted by grateful at 12:56 PM on August 7, 2006
No, because until they're used to tag a post, they're just words. They don't become tags until they're tagged onto a post.
End of story. posted by scrump at 2:25 PM on August 7, 2006
Do they somehow make tags less useful? posted by absalom at 5:35 PM on August 7, 2006
this thread needs an elephant pissing. posted by shmegegge at 5:54 PM on August 7, 2006
absalom and scrump, you may have missed the start of the thread, when the tags were "Bush," "Iraq," Israel" and other things like that, which definitely did make those tags less useful. "NotBush," "NotIraq," etc. is marginally better because there's less of a chance the noise will show up for anyone else searching for posts about those topics.
In fact, if b_b had used the "Not..." tags to start with, I assure you this MeTa thread wouldn't exist. posted by mediareport at 6:15 PM on August 7, 2006
Ah, well, that makes everything a lot more clear cut. posted by absalom at 6:32 PM on August 7, 2006
I think his post needs more "Not..." tags.
