Who are we? January 4, 2007 11:41 AM   Subscribe

Just a curious question... what is the real demographic of MeFi users? As much as we think of this as the hive mind, my sense is that about 80% of the poeple on here fit in the white, male, 24-35 variety. A very homogenous set of bees me thinks. Am I totally off?

I can't imagine there's any way to really find out. Especially if your definition of "users" includes people who just read and don't post.

How are we to know? If people enter such data about themselves in their profiles, there's no guarantee that it's not made up. And any voluntary poll is unlikely to be a representative sample of users.

That said, I fit that demo. Except once a month when I involuntarily assume my wolf form for a few hours.
posted by chinston at 11:45 AM on January 4, 2007

There's no good way to pin it down. In a straw poll, only a tiny handful of the site's members (let alone readers) will opt-in, so that won't work.

Matt could hit IP logs and make best-bet estimates by correlating against the census demographics for the cities/states/countries that IP groups resolve to, weighted proportionally, but even that's armchair at best.

Matt could run a mandatory demographic poll, but I'm under the impression he likes having any readers at all and so he probably won't do that.

I've found that there are more active MeFites over 35 than I had previously assumed, so the median age is probably over 30, easy. Though probably mot as old as when there were <1 0k... of course, those 10k's are all 5-7 years older than when they joined.br>
We could probably use the lat/long data to determine urban vs. suburban vs. rural (those who still get their internet delivered by horse and buggy). That would be interesting.

On disadvantage of this is that we have had to rely on folks like languagehat to represent all-languages-other-than-English. This is too much to ask, even of him, and in this example going on right now, shows how we miss out on formal usage vs. the informal.

Even if Metafilter is in English, there is a distinct "voice" that other cultures bring. I recall when Miguel Cardoso was a frequent poster here, for example, he had that formal yet chatty and familial way of writing and communicating which, to my mind, is sooo typical of Latin and many Mediterranean cultures. Reading his posts always felt to me like one of my uncles was here on Metafilter.

The recent AmbroseChapel post depressed the hell out of me. It was a long conversation between the self-appointed defenders of other cultures (how patronizing) and those who also misunderstood them but in a different way. Everything, even stavros great writeup of Korean culture, is as seen through this filter of how-we-see-them.

When AmbroseChapel wrote something about they should just call the police I could hear my Mexican mom's voice in the background: "Those silly Americans. Calling the police and calling lawyers. We're all people who share a community and what we need to do is to talk openly - not just blindly act on the assumptions we make about each other."

I'm white but not the kind of white you mean. Because, yeah, just being the same colour doesn't make us all the same culture. Of course I'm also female so don't fit anyway.

A very homogenous set of bees me thinks.

Which is the whole point of a hive. They're all siblings so helping their parents continue to reproduce is genetically the same as reproducing themselves (and are much more closely related than siblings produced elsewhere). Working for the greater good of the hive over the good of the individual isn't altruism. Which is why I've always found it weird, the whole appealing to the hive mind. Done right you're not really bringing in outside resources or viewpoints just consulting a greater uniformity of which you are a part, and conformity is to be expected.

Given the constraints that English is the language used here, that you need a computer and internet access, that it costs a few bucks to join, that we tend to skew (through design or serendipity) towards the articulate/artsy/literary/geeky/techy interests (since day one, I'd say), I reckon we've got a reasonably diverse membership. Could be more so, sure, but it could be a lot worse.
posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 5:35 PM on January 4, 2007

Yep, a more diverse bunch of geeks than you'll find anywhere else on the Intarwebs. Because, really, any artificial grouping of people is always going to be skewed in some way. People group together because of some (if only tenuous) shared link, after all.

Even in those areas where we are not actually diverse, I think we are well and truly capable of diverse thinking which has the same end result. We don't always exercise that capability, of course, which is our curse.

Dude, bees are like... homogeneous by nature. There is the queen, some drones, and thousands of workers that are all born from the queen and thus genetically very, very similar. Errr... if we're talking about honey bees. That's what's kind of bothered me about the whole "hive mind" thing. The analogy is based upon the nature of social insects; this nature is defined by a queen attended by many workers that are sisters. I guess, when querying the "hive mind" the queen must be jessamyn, and the workers the rest of Metafilter.

"A very homogeneous set of bees me thinks," thus sounds kind of weird if it is meant to make a point about the proposed lack of diversity on Metafilter because that's exactly what a set of bees is supposed to be. It'd make more sense if somehow you'd made it "a very homogeneous set of something that is usually outrageously diverse in nature." Like... mmm... I donno.

But this whole hive mind thing bothers me just the same. Each Mefite, whether black, white, beige, cyan, or whatever thinks differently. Even the world of white people is a vast and diverse place, which I think is something we miss out on here too. It's just as bad as stereotyping as Latinos as "Mexican."

I think what really unites us is that we all like Metafilter and the inherent geekiness of it all. We have formed a unique online culture that is mostly colorblind because we cannot physically see the other person. Sometimes a person's race comes out, but not often. And you know what? Even without seeing race or knowing another person's nationality, we're still often bastards to one another. I suspect it's not as bad as it could potentially be, but who knows?

I am not white (I am blessed with a nice round ass for my genetic heritage). Maybe I will have to redefine my perceptions, but I don't care what the rest of ya'll are unless you want me to. Otherwise, I consider each and everyone here of the nationality "Mefite," and the race "Blue."

No cats, or dogs. Had mice but they've moved on since I started putting all my food in plastic containers, and chasing them around the kitchen with 1 watt LED torch, spitting little gobbets of high acidity vinegar at their faces. They don't like that, and avoid my place now. Sometimes I miss them, but then I remember the pyramids of tiny poos under the sink. Got lots of flies though. The torch and vinegar thing don't seem to work so well on the flies. At least their shits are smaller. Although my walls are getting this dot-matrix effect which is none to pretty. I wear glasses and sometimes, also a hat.

Wow, that'd be a real MeFi supergroup. As is the trendlet in cutting-edge music these days, perhaps you two could combine your user names and come up with some really intellectual-sounding band moniker. I've taken the liberty of coming up with a few (you'll forgive me if they're not all perfect anagrams, but people will get the idea):

coloquatexcious?
locortcious rex?
xeroctious clot?
exlac squat tric?

Feel free to use one of these! Maybe just send me a free record when it comes out?

and... maybe a backstage pass?
