Deleted Thread February 1, 2007 8:59 AM   Subscribe

WCityMike got me thinking with his recent thread. I like deleted thread. Frankly I think its uniqueness constitutes BOTW. So...would it violate the rules to do a blue post about it? (AFAIK no one has yet)

Probably belongs here, as it's MetaFilter-related, rather than there.

It's about Metafilter, so it belongs in Metatalk.

It's satisfying to think that even the stuff we delete is the 'Best of the Web'. But if it was 'BOTW' why would it have been deleted in the first place?

To push the point further, though, Ask MetaFilter is also probably best of the web, and also hasn't been posted to the front page of the blue, to my knowledge.

I know...creates this circular logic...

Has anyone posted metafilter to the blue yet?

It's a really good site, routergirl.

Has anyone posted metafilter to the blue yet?

The internet would collapse in on its self like a snake eating its own tail.

Has anyone digged digg yet?

I'm thinking that even if it were allowed (I honestly don't know), you'd get a whole bucket of flack for it, allkindsoftime. It'd be like, "Meh", and maybe "These were deleted for a reason" and then after several comments like that someone would post a link to meta and say, "BOTW?" and Mattamyn would go in and clean up snarky comments and/or delete the whole thing with a comment like, "We deleted these for a reason".

I'm not invested either way - I'm just using my powers of prediction here.

It belongs in the grey, not on Metafilter. Think of it as a collective self-link.

Using the blue to draw attention to things pointedly removed from the blue is not a great idea. I say this despite being a daily deletion reader.

(As an incidental link in a well-constructed post about website administration or meta-commentary or such, it'd fit, I suppose.)

Sometimes the deletion reasons are hilarious. And the ASCII art.

What? kingoftheshitpile.blogspot.com was taken?

I read Deleted Thread, too, for what its worth. I think cortex said it the best - if you could couch it in a related post, it would fly, but on its own, I don't think so.

I think ask.me was the subject of a front page post when it was launched, although I can't find it right now.

From post-a-link page: The link you entered (ask.metafilter.com) was found in 90 previous threads. The oldest occurring on December 17, 2003 by MiguelCardoso.

Has anyone digged digg yet?

No, but DuggMirror has, with over 12,000 diggs.

For a second I thought BOTW meant Ban Of The Week. That would make a much more exciting MeTa feature.

If it's about MetaFilter it belongs on MetaTalk, where it now is.

Yeah! Go ahead and post it to MetaTalk! I can't wait to check it out, once you've posted it to MetaTalk, as others have suggested!

In some ways, this thread reminds me of a recurring dream I used to have. It's like this, see: I invent a time machine. I use it to travel back in time. The act of travelling back in time somehow destroys the universe. So, I decide to try to stop myself from inventing a time machine. This ultimately fails, as in order to go back in time and keep myself from inventing a time machine, I have to eventually invent a time machine. Ad infinitum.

I haven't had that dream in a while.

Are you kidding me? There's been a link to AskMe on the front page for years.

Are you kidding me?! Playoffs?!?

I wish that deletedthread allowed comments.

Any particular reason? I turned comments off when I saw that the only comment ever posted was some spam. I could turn them back on if it's that interesting.

Actually, now that I look I can see there are a fair amount of comments on old posts. I think all but one was spam.

Blogger has a pretty good comment spam blocker at this point.
