I think that this thread applies. If, however, that is the thread that you mention finding, then I am misunderstanding your question. Can you give an example of the situation you are describing?

The thread iceberg put there is full of important info, but the main issue is: Is what you're cutting and pasting copyrighted? Because if it is...

Many thanks. (damn pissed I couldnt find on my own and double pissed I couldnt get my thread link to work)

Specifics: An excellent NYT guest editorial dated October 28 which relates to an article from yesterday's NYT (regarding generational impact of speaking with grandparents about WW2 etc) Im a NYT offline/online subscriber. I have the October article saved on my hard drive. If I search the NYT site today for the October article, it leads to an abstract the reader has to pay for. Cut and paste, some other (simple solution) or fogeddaboutit (sp?)

I'm happy to be corrected, but I think that the line of reasoning which is expressed in the thread linked above is the correct one: it may seem illogical, but you shouldn't cut-n-paste the piece. You have the right to read it, and share it in a limited way, but not to republish it on MeFi. (I'm speaking in terms of what I understand about the law -- not about ethics).

Voyageman, what you're suggesting could subject Matt to legal penalties for violation of copyright.

In other words, "don't."

(Who is this guy, anyway?)

You might try searching on Google or Daypop for the first few words of the editorial. Sometimes NYTimes pieces are republished a little later in other online publications.

I wasn't suggesting, I was asking.

Thanks, Karl

Steven, if you are asking about Voyageman's identity, your guess is as good as mine. It seems like he has a subscription to on-and-offline the New York Times, and is also a reader of the print version of the New York Post (1, 2, 3). He has taken up a Ivanhoe-esque crusade to gain his 'special female friend' (elsewhere known as The Oakland QT) a MeFi membership. Nearly half of his posts to MeTa, four (once on the 9th, twice on the 12th and again once on the 14th) of nine to date, have advocated for her inclusion. Judging from his persistence, I'd only guess that she is extremely skilled at womanly-arts and have promised to flow some his way once he has won her a membership. Song in my head: The things we do for love, which for some reason I swear I thought was sung by The Temptations.

But this is not nearly as freaky as nobody_knose, who posted a MeTa thread speculating the use of MeFi as focus group research/buzz generator and then went on to post two threads about Bloomberg's win in NYC and moderating the second one about this victory and its implications to the Blacks/Black leadership/Al Sharpton and the Democratic Party.

This is starting to get good.

tamin:

just noticed your speculation on me...rest assured I'm just a NYer trying to figure out what the long term implications of the election are.
