Asking two questions?
posted by niles to Etiquette/Policy at 5:04 PM (42 comments total)

First off, apologies if I'm missing the obvious connection between space flight and night vision.

What's the policy on multiple questions in one AskMe post? I could understand asking about two related issues, but the poster actually prefaced his second question with "(unrelated)". Should such things be allowed?

No go. But if you can find a spurious connection between your questions then I'm sure it'll fly ["I want to find out more about NASA - I need infra-red binoculars and a space radio..."].

I think this falls into the muddy grey waters of Lake Generally Frowned Upon. People shouldn't do it, as a rule, but as the user in question has almost zero posting history and we don't seem to see it too often anyway, focusing too keenly on this particular instance doesn't seem necessary.

If it gets axed on principle, I won't be surprised or upset, but I don't think letting it stand would hurt the site appreciably either.

Cortex totally wants to be a Jessadmin.

But, y'know, not a librarian.

Though, maybe a singing librarian.

Dear AskMe. I want to get into a good technical college -- any recommendations. Also, on a possibly unrelated note, what's the best way to butcher a cat?

Someone (loquacious?) posted a huge list of unanswered questions once long ago. I can't seem to find it, which supports my suspicion that administration blasted it from recorded history. mathowie didn't just close the thread and offer a pithy reprimand, he fucking annihilated it.

Actually, something in the realms of library science would probably be pretty rewarding. What I don't want is to pay for a masters.

Anyone else thinking foodybat is Lisa Nowak?

Astro Zombie, the best way to learn to butcher a cat is to get a solid degree from a technical college-your better institutions will offer at least a minor. As far as your other question is concerned, I've heard that one of the finest ways to impress a technical admissions committee is to present them with a choice cut of feline tenderloin, fit for grilling.

carsonb, I remember that; it wasn't so long ago, though it was before I dropped the $5. It was loquacious. I'm pretty sure it got annihilated; I can't find it either. Also I am surprised that this double question thing doesn't happen more often.

the muddy grey waters of Lake Generally Frowned Upon

Just a few miles upstream to Lake Woebegone, which is unfortunately hard as hell to get to when you're trying to get up Shit Creek without a paddle.

They were both kinda sorta related. I mean, if you're tracking the space shuttle's every move, you might want to stare at it during the night, right?

This bastard love child question is what a 2-week askme limit begets. And it doesn't really bother me that much, but I can see how it might irk the more authoritarian readers out there.

I guess it isn't as bad as asking for the best recipe for blue cheese dressing and btw, how can I make my cat use her litterbox.

It's okay to butcher it as long as you don't declaw it first.

No, no, Languagehat. The blue cheese goes in the litterbox. So creamy and inviting!

Deleted Ask Metafilter threads, up until around two years ago were deleted for good, not just removed from view. I myself had a 'chatty' question deleted before the switch — I asked about what the problem was with male gynecologists, and proffered Dr. Huxtable as a strawman example. Would you refuse to hire even Dr. Huxtable as your OB-GYN? I would think not, but apparently others do.

Point of order: can cortex close MetaTalk threads?
posted by staggernation at 7:40 PM on March 1, 2007

I can, but I'm going to step lightly there. More of a Matt call, really.
posted by cortex (staff) at 7:49 PM on March 1, 2007

That is, closing threads that aren't flat-out obviously spent utility threads. If the thread is just "hey bug report" and the bug is resolved, I'm cool closing up. It's the more subjective stuff that I'm not so inclined to jump into.
posted by cortex (staff) at 9:37 PM on March 1, 2007

Good. One of my ongoing problems with Matt is his eagerness to close MeTa threads when he feels "we're done here" or "I think there's no more to say." What the hell is wrong with letting people talk? That's what MetaTalk is for.
