It's a joke frchristssakes. April 1, 2007 10:17 AM   Subscribe

Y'know...I can handle bad April Fool's jokes from tech companies (or others). Yeah, they aren't great, but megacorporations aren't really known for their great sense of humour. What I hate is that people feel this is there opportunity to bitch, whine and complain about someone else's attempt at humour, how much they hate AFD, how it should have been funnier, or how they would have done it better. It's a joke frchristssakes. Laugh. Or don't. Just don't whine.

I think metafilter would lose about 40% of it's content if people couldn't bitch and/or snark about things they felt didn't live up to their standards.

I think he's referencing replies like this:

Do we really have to have two dozen stupid ass joke posts today? How about just link to here and be done with it?

Ack, I totally fell for it. Are the missing askme threads part of the joke?

Oooh, it's just a blip because 59657 is anonymous. I'm going back to bed.

When I wrote that it was 9:30 AM and there had already been FOUR posts on the blue about stupid AFD shit. One was thankfully deleted already. If everybody posted their own little "ha ha look at my favorite site, they're so funny today" post, then we'd have about four hundred boring posts.

If there's a post on an AFD-modified site or other AFD joke, then, know what? It is the opportunity for people to say they didn't find it that funny, that it could have been done better, etc., etc. It's a legitimate, on-topic response. I know there are some people who would like MeFi to be all puppies and rainbows and hugs, but I for one am glad that we have a certain amount of disagreement and debate here, regardless of whether it's in the politics threads or in the AFD threads.

But yeah, Rhomboid's comment cited above belongs in MeTa, not in the thread on the blue.

(Also, I had to ask Stynxno, what's AFD? I even googled it, figuring it was an abbreviation for some website. Duh!)

There is no such thing as AFD. I think that it's just another lameass April Fool's Day joke.

Sorry, but this itself comment doesn't live up to my standards, so I'm doing my part right now to maintain that 40%.

I'd like to suggest that an automatic bannination for saying 'meh' or 'yawn' or the like as the sole content of a comment would be a very, very good thing.

On a related note, those April fools askme's were really fucking funny.

My favorite was Have you stopped beating your wife, yet? (OSX 10.3, if that helps.), but I also really liked the one about 'what should we name the kitten'. Thanks for the good times folks.
