A stripper1 once told me I looked like "that guy, George" on Seinfeld. It was one of the most inept attempts at a compliment I've ever encountered. It depressed me for a week. In that photo, I'm the guy on the left. I don't think I look like George. On the other hand, that photo was taken last fall. When this stripper incident occurred, I looked like this. Nah, I still don't think I look like George, even in that unflattering photo.

1. I mentioned in a previous MeTa comment that I've been to a strip club only a few times. This isn't why. Really.

A stripper1 once told me I looked like "that guy, George" on Seinfeld.

My whole life, I was able to find some aspect of every single person I ever saw physically attractive. No kidding. And I could always see how, as you came to know and love them, they would get better and better looking to you. It was kind of a gift.

And then I met this woman Amy. And I just couldn't see it in her. Nothing at all. I worked on a committee with her, came to like her just fine, thought she was kind of funny, but could not see her beauty. Not one iota of it.

And she is the only person I have consistently been mistaken for in my life. I'd be in the bookstore and someone would say, "Hi, Amy!" I'd be at the grocery store: "Hey, Amy, how you doing?" Over and over, for several years when we were moving in the same community a lot.

That's when I destroyed all photographic evidence of my existence and retired to the island hermitage where I will live out the remainder of my days.

Every time I'm on a web forum, and then see a picture of someone I respect on the board, they never look like the image I've developed for them, and I always lose a bunch of my respect for them.

Over time, I came to see that the images I give to the women and men whose words I respect on the forums always look more or less the same.

Now I'm just trying to figure out who those images represent (they look nothing like my parents) -- but it's kind of like chasing a dream after you've been awake too long.

Meanwhile, everyone whose words I read on a forum and *don't* respect gets a cartoon character face applied to them.

There's probably value in seeing people as how they really are in conjunction with how you've imagined them from their words. It's probably the case that the idealized (or stereotypical, as the case may be) mental images we create of someone on the basis of just their words reflects a variety of biases that just aren't very good things. Don't you think?

Also, is this the right place to bitch and moan about the hamfisted Freud-by-the-numbers crap in this week's episode? No?

Then I'll just mention that I occasionally would get compared to Hugh Laurie when we were both younger. I believe this was a nice way of saying "you're a bit goofy looking".
posted by Lentrohamsanin at 7:44 AM on May 11, 2007

Lentrohamsanin, the Linderman thing would be a cool twist, but it might be too much of a repeat of the cheerleader's father.

I thought this week was interesting in terms of almost making sympathetic, especially when compared to this week's Lost (which was actually pretty good).

When he was doing "A little Fry and Laurie" in the UK, he came to a party held by my brother in law. There was this completely embarrassing situation and he came up with the best quote just off the cuff.

I forget what it actually was. But shagging him, in the bathroom, was my first cousin twice removed's highlight of the day.
