I got home from work yesterday to find my totally awesome MetaFilter t-shirt waiting for me in my pile of mail!
Anyone else sporting one of these totally cool and very blue t-shirts?
You'll need a carton of milk and a loaf of bread in that photo, too.

I had mine shipped to a friend's house, where it's now waiting for me along with my new MacBook. When I get to his apartment in a week, I just have to remember to act happy to see my friend, too.

There are several shirts on the metafilter tag at flickr. Mine showed up on Friday just as I was leaving for the airport so I won't have them to photograph for a couple more days.

Next, I think that Matt should offer a mefi-branded personal assistant1.
1. And by “personal assistant”, I of course mean “slave”—preferably a mefite chosen via MetaTalk pile-on. Or pie-on. Whichever.

Well, to be fair, bigmusic's pictures is kind of washed out and a bit lighter than the actual shirt. The real color is a happy medium between that and the coudal shot, I'd say.

Well, damn. I don't like the color in Big Music's photo. And, yeah, that isn't 336699. How come?
I thought MeFi was a hotbed for Mac users and designers. Don't you people use color management and calibrate your monitors? I'm neither a Mac user nor a designer and I bought (and use) a Spyder2Pro.
On Preview: “The real color is a happy medium between that and the coudal shot, I'd say.”
Well, that'd be a bit better, I guess.

It's really impossible to get a 006699 shirt without custom dyes. This shirt is brighter than the site color, but I didn't consider it totally far off, just a tad more blue than green on the official color and a bit brighter.
I've searched for the past two years looking for a t-shirt maker that did a shirt anywhere close to the mefi color, and eventually found a small brooklyn-based company that did something really close to the color. I ordered a few blanks to test and they showed up in the right color but too bright.
A few months went by and I got a threadless shirt in an aqua/blue and it was next to the custom NYC shirt in my laundry when I realized the fruit of the loom shirt color was very close in hue, though too bright.
When this company asked me if I wanted to try mefi shirts, I said sure and the easiest option was this pacific blue fruit of the loom shirt (the NYC company shirts were several dollars more and are too tight and thin anyway).
I've asked tshirt companies about custom dyes and they like to do them in lots of 10,000 or so and it adds a few dollars per shirt.

Heh. I meant to be more jokey than belligerent. It sounds like Matt has tried his best to get the color right. But the color in big music's photo is way too, um, bright for me. It's just not a color I like in a shirt I'd wear—I'd prefer something either washed out (which I could engineer, I guess) or darker.
Of course there's just no telling how accurate all this color reproduction is—we should keep that in mind when we argue about this. A properly calibrated monitor is only the last step. The various photos and even that swatch page could, and probably are, off.
I'm not sure why/how I got to be so anal about color reproduction even though I'm not involved with the things that typically make someone care about this stuff. I think it started when I calibrated my home theater TV and realized how much better it looked. Then after I first calibrated my monitor with software and started using color management, everything on the computer looked better and I realized that I had been missing a lot of color subtlety. Partly, too, I'm fascinated by human color vision as both a biological and theoretical topic. So I do realize how difficult this all is. But even so, normalizing things so that either they are "true" to life or that we are getting as close as possible to what the designer/photographer/whomever intended just seems "right" to me.

As am I. I know it's silly to be irked by something like this, and sure the ad says "As close as possible", so we got the caveat emptor covered, but why not put up a new ad of Smiley McNopants that's a little closer to the real thing? Hell, when bigmusic posted his pic I initially thought he got a bum copy or something. Honestly, I'd have rather bought this.

I don't care that it's not #336699, just that the blue in the pic seems a far cry from even the "Pacific Blue" color. Mine looks like Bigmusic's pic. Like seawater in Bermuda.

If nothing else, this thread just reinforces how representations of colors of a simple jpeg vary wildly depending on monitor age/type/calibration, OS gamma settings, ambient lighting type/amount, viewer's physiological peculiarities, and so on.
I still say a plain white shirt of high quality fabric that just has the MetaFilter text logo would be perfect.

I wouldn't mind having the shirt if it had a different neckline: v-neck, or scoopneck. Crew necks look terrible on me. Until that's up for sale, I'll just keep wearing my Cafe press babydoll t-shirt.

I think I will wind up cutting it up, maybe intercutting it with other logo tees. Meanwhile, I have some cyan earrings to match. Rawk!

What about some iron-on logos? They would only be a buck or two and we could put em on whatever damn t-shirt we want. In fact, I could make curtains, put one on the butt of my overalls, et cetera.

Until you offer something in XXL, I am just going to continue to wear my "Macho Broccoli" shirt, which happens to be closer to AskMeFi green than the MeFi shirt is to MeFi blue.
Actually, their Forest Green "self-centered universe" shirt (scroll down) is even closer to AskMeFi color, if somewhat darker (hex 2d4c3c vs. 426746). And look at the background color on "Please do not eat this t-shirt". It's hex 005D8B and the other shirts I've gotten from goats.com have been very true to their illustration colors. (I may buy it myself just to find out) When you think about it, webcomics artists who sell t-shirts are probably going to know color better than most people, and be more perfectionist about it.

Damn it. What happened to the CafePress store? I really like the white shirt better than the blues ones. And now even blue ones are limited and not in the size I want.
I'm now on my third MeFi shirt and it looks like I need to try and make sure the current one doesn't wear out ever? Very sad.

I took the cafepress store away because I hadn't sold anything in 5 months and I was never happy with the low-quality of their iron-on style stuff (which is probably why you went through three shirts).
I want to do real screenprinted shirts that last so I took the cafepress stuff down.

Threadless was where I first got a shirt in this color. Here's a Pacific Blue shirt there that is close to the shirt color. It's not super far off mefi's color, but it is a bit brighter.

But that's just because I like to hide in the dark spaces.

Why DON'T we pronounce the N in kiln?
From Barbara Strang's A History of English (1970), p. 166: "There were also widespread tendencies for the loss of consonants. Probably of early 15c date are the loss of /n/ after /m/ and /l/ in damn, condemn, mill, kiln (the last restored by spelling-pronunciation in RP but not in craft or dialect use), and of /p/ in cupboard, raspberry." (A review of the book in Studia Neophilologica complained that "In damn, condemn, mill and kiln (166) there has been assimilation rather than loss of /n/, and myll is first recorded as early as 1020!" But that doesn't affect the point at issue. Call it assimilation or loss, early 11th century or early 15th century, it happened a long time ago, and potters still leave the /n/ out while people who never saw a kiln in their life put it back in because they see it written; they probably also pronounce chitterlings and victuals the way they're spelled.)

Per dictionary.com:
Victuals = vittles
Chitterlings = chitlins
Kiln = kil or kiln
I've seen both victuals and chitterlings spelled they way they're pronounced but never connected the two.
Thanks, languagehat!

“I've seen both victuals and chitterlings spelled they way they're pronounced but never connected the two.”
Isn't that a weird feeling? I've gotten old enough now that this almost never happens to me anymore, which is both a relief and sort of sad. As a youngster, I really wasn't around people that used many of the words in speech that I read. So, like many people in my position, I often would logically sound-out new words and then, many years later, discover that some word I'd heard (but rarely read) was the same word as some word I'd read (but rarely heard).
So, I too, am really thankful for lauguagehat for his comment. Not to mention that I didn't know about kiln, either.
