Mythbusters Redux May 30, 2007 9:20 PM   Subscribe

Our episode of Mythbusters aired tonight, aside from a MeFi sign noticed last month, did anyone spot any other promised shout-outs? [For those without TV, you can see a small segment on silver bullets here, under Mythbusters Uncut. Also, check out the Ask a Ninja clip, just because.]

Nope, and I even read all the "Special Thanks To" at the end.

But the sign was still a good shout-out. It was even on during the airbag myth (which seemed like it wandered into the Wild West show by accident).

fact: stagecoaches had airbags made of sheep's lungs. It would take a while to fill, but passengers knowing a crash was imminent would be safe.

Metafilter: Airbags made of sheep's lungs.

That left me feeling rather sheepish.

O crap-on-a-biscuit! I missed it. But thanks for the post, I have my Tifaux set to catch it at the 2 a.m. showing. I won't be asleep, but I'll be busy teaching my cat how to snort coke.

So I just watched the whole thing and there wasn't anything in the credits or the blueprints, but wasn't the original mefi shoutout on a green chalkboard in the background of other episodes? Because in this one it looked like it was on a brown door in the background, which seems like a second location.

Oh wait, looking at the old screenshots, it's in the exact same place. Still, pretty cool.

What were the busted myths? Did they use any of the AskMe suggestions? I don't have TV. =o(

oh, and silver vs. lead bullets is online

God damnit, life got in the way and I missed it.

Anyone know when it will air again?

Oh, just in case this keeps coming up again and again, I went ahead and wrote the definitive post explaining this all on my blog.

carsonb: "What were the busted myths? Did they use any of the AskMe suggestions? I don't have TV."

I believe that in his interview podcast, he said that there didn't really use any new ideas in the thread, but that many of suggestions helped them realize that ideas they had discarded as "no one thinks that" were actually pretty good. Or something to that effect. I'll have to listen to it again.

We've gone from "mefi's own adam savage," to actually saying "our episode," eh?

Cool. At this rate, all of cable television will be ours by the end of the year. (And ultimately, MINE! Mwauhahaha!)

I could have sworn that I saw www.metafilter.com listed in the “special thanks” credits. I don’t have a DVR, though, so no screenshot. Perhaps it was just my projected desire. I definitely did see MeFi written in tape on the background.

I read the special thanks in slo-mo on my TiVo, and it didn't show up. It doesn't matter, since a giant MeFi in the background is a thousand times better.

Wow, eh? Metafilter is getting more Canadian by the day! Why? Because you can tell you're a Canadian if:
a) you can spot a reference to, and get all excited by, a reference to Canada on an AMERICAN tv show
b)you talk about it around the water cooler the next day.
Don't believe me?house
And of course, it's on everyone's list "How can you tell you're Canadian" (just substitute Metafilter for Canada):
this list
number 21 on this list
and here
#42 here

Wonders if she got that right...

Well, then we will certainly have cameras.

Seriously, "our episode"? Just because he decided to ask people for new ideas he could use? And then didn't use any of them? But you still want a shoutout even though you failed him? Totally let him down? I mean, he came to you in his hour of need and got NUTHIN! NUTHIN, I SAY! Had to go back to his old ideas, his head hung low... mumbling "Metafilter, I'm so disappointed in you. I thought you were different." to himself. Sigh. Poor man.

Anyhow, when it's updated, that episode will probably be here.

It's totally our episode. Anything that has anything remotely to do with MetaFilter is claimable. People named Jessamyn that may or may not be the one from MeFi; Mythbuster shows; minor celebrities that commented once or twice in the Blue; and so forth.

It's all ours!!!

Actually miss lynnster, all three myths were brought up in the thread. I think Plutor must be thinking of something else.

It was a good episode, but like smackfu, I was kinda wondering how the airbag myth got into the western episode.

Next weeks looks good as well; they are going to see if you can drive a car into the back of a moving semi. An act which equals awesome in my world.

On a tangent, anyone have any idea what brand of sunglasses Adam Savage wears? They are pretty rad and I want a pair.
posted by spicynuts at 9:54 AM on May 31, 2007

Oh, btw: the day after we taped the podcast interview, Adam was flying to a racetrack to do that Knight Rider myth thing the next morning. So it seems like a pretty fast schedule from taping to playing on TV.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 9:54 AM on May 31, 2007

On a somewhat related tangent, I was going to wonder if anyone knew what kind of green jacket Adam wears occasionally, and when I went to google to find a picture of it, I found the question had already been asked and answered right here on AskMe.

Which was such a meta experience that it made my head hurt and I had to sit down for a bit.

He'd look far more professional in a white jacket.

They have white jackets on Brainiac. shudder

I don't recall if a specific make/model was mentioned, but they did address his sunglasses in the podcast mentioned in this comment.

Yeah, what the hell? They use my suggestion, and not only do I see no mention of willnot in the special thanks credits, I didn't even get a best answer mark in the thread.

Ah well, I guess it's true. Those big famous TV stars just don't care about the little people.

It was pretty cool watching the dynamite blow up. If I was the prisoner, I probably would have wanted to move as far away from the dynamite as the cell allowed as opposed to huddling right under the window, but I never thought about the potential for shrapnel, so I imagine either way I'd be pretty dead.

I'd love to see a "MEFI" shout-out on *every* episode, but in a different place every time -- so you have to scour the entire episode to find it.

Kinda like "Where's Waldo", only with, you know, "MEFI" instead.
posted by LordSludge at 12:46 PM on May 31, 2007

I hope they rerun it at some point soon... I was really lookin forward to that episode.
posted by CitrusFreak12 at 12:47 PM on May 31, 2007

By the way smackfu, I think Brainiac is much better with Vic Reeves at the helm.

Interesting, I might need to start watching it again.

Sorry I'm late, it only ocurred to me to look for this thread today.
Hello!
Yup, I added MeFi to the background of the blueprint room, and there it'll stay. I did request a special thanks to metafilter but it looks like it got lost in the shuffle. When we did our JetPack episdode, we were GIVEN a 7k airplane engine and Discovery forgot to put a 'thanks' at the end of the show. We sent it back with our profound apologies.
My sunglasses (which my sister recently derided as "faggy"--not that there's anything wrong with that...) come from SEE, who make their own frames, and in the store, the price usually INCLUDES the price of putting a prescription in! They are model number (hold on while I go get them...Yeah, here they are).. this is what it says inside the right temple:
SEE 5112
And this is what it says inside the left temple:
60 19 140 C32

I'll add more mefi shouts. Keep looking.

I'm pretty happy with the episode, though I thought the animations left something to be desired (the guy that did the really good ones left... *sigh*).

I personally dub thee wild west episode as a MeFi ep.

Let me know if there's a MeFi gathering in San Francisco, and I'll buy you all a beer...

Cheers all,

a
