Does code work here?
Yes it does: You can use

instead of pre, too. aside from Freeze Frame and the title cut, Centerfold sucks
J. Geils didn't write the song, buddy. It was the drummer, or something.
Full House is the only J. Geils album you need.
Before getting into the meat of things, I'd like to address this from your callout:
In my personal list of "Things MetaFilter is Not", I'd rank "Popularity Contest" above "Rallying Tool". Let me be the first to tell you:
- Congratulations
- Don't give a crap
As for the beef in fourcheesemac...First, a bit of background. In the Gonzales thread this morning, she first heralded MeFi's posting of the news ahead of CNN, et. al. She then proceeded to repeatedly encourage participants in the thread to write their Senators. When it was pointed out that a "recess appointment" of a new AG was unlikely, she landed with this gem:
My response is here, to which I was called out for a public fracas.
fcm, if you've been here as long as you say, you've surely seen endless arguments about Newsfilter. Again and again, the de facto "policy" is that SingleLinkNewsStories are not MeFi "the way it was intended", but they're quietly accepted because people like to yammer on and on about big stories. So someone posted it to MeFi before DailyKos or the Huffington Post or whomever. Big deal. MeFi isn't here to "scoop" anyone. MeFi is not about being "first", it's about being "good".
Personally, I like the political discussion around here. It's unfortunate that the actual posts are generally craptacular, but MeFi is one of the (increasingly) very few places on the web where I can find a cogent argument from someone I completely disagree with. And as you said, there is "plenty of advocacy (and links to relevant resources) in most political threads here." I had no problem with your first comment. It's the repeated rallying that came after. Put simply, it's a distraction for those who are interested in talking about various aspects of what happened. And when you took it upon yourself to keep going with your "Plan B", you went into full derail mode. MetaFilter is simply not a tool for organizing political activity. If you want to get into it about that point, by all means, but I think you'll find few allies in that fight.
If you're inclined to activism, there are plenty of fellow travellers to be found at places like MoveOn.org or the aforementioned political blogs.
What REALLY irked me, however was this:
"Our"? To paraphrase your in-thread callout of me, who the fuck do you think you are to presume to speak for Metafilter?
In spite of what a lot of people apparently think, MeFi is not some Democratic haven; there is a wide swath of political opinion here. And then there are the folks who don't even live in the U.S. Your naive assumption is disrespectful to a lot of users who contribute a lot of good content.
I think that about covers it. Feel free to respond, either here or using the email address in my profile.
