Meetup in Ottawa? August 27, 2007 5:51 AM Subscribe
Those of you putzing around on MeMu know I am heavily into folksongs and folk singing. This Thursday at 7:30 pm I am hosting a song session at Rasputin's in Ottawa (696 Bronson, for those of you who live here). The focus will be strongly towards accapella song, whether in groups or solo, and there will (hopefully) be singing from as many different musical traditions as we can manage.
Since I'm new here, I'd love the opportunity to meet some local Mefites; I thought this would be a fantastic excuse for a meetup. No singing is required, I'll only ask that you don't talk when someone is singing, out of respect for the singer.
So, are there any Mefites in Ottawa interested in coming down to Rasputin's on Thursday? I'd love to meet you!
I'd love to meet you! And by "meet" I mean know that you are sitting there quietly watching myself and others sing acapella folk songs.

quidnunc, I can't afford plane fares for yourself and your stoats, but if you want to come, I'm sure we can make room in the session criteria for some mute interpretive dance on your part.

A self-promotional "meetup" where you're asked not to talk! Sounds great!!!

OK, to clarify...
The no-talking thing really wasn't meant as a deterrent, it's just that any singing that's going to happen will be unamplified (sung from the floor, as opposed to the stage), and Rasputin's is a small place. A lot of talking is going to force the singer to push their voice harder than normal, which isn't nice.
So please don't think that there won't be any opportunity for socializing. But I'm asking that you don't shout your conversation at the top of your lungs, since there will be people there wanting to sing without blistering their vocal chords.

Methinks jonson could do with more putzing around MeMu; LN's contributions are the bee's knees, IMO. Wish I could go, have a great time!

I always knew that it would come to this. The MeMus versus the normals. Well, so be it. You think that you are so cool with you guitar strings and your gigs and your sunglasses and your knobs and buttons on that control panel thingy and that clip that you use to change cords, what is that damn thing called, a capo? You think that makes you cool?! Well take your damn capos and shove them up your ass! MeMu freaks.

And already she was in the podcast. How long did it take you to get in the podcast, jonson?

Mod note: though I will note that putzing around does literally mean "penising around" which I do not think is exactly what you meant.

I'm going to see Phantom of the Opera at the NAC. Trust me, I would love to meet another MeFite, but it is Phantom and I have pining for the show for 8 years and I have owned a version of it on CD since I was 10, so.....
have fun though! :)

Three years, eleven months, one week, three days, eight hours and 43 minutes. It was the greatest day of my life, narrowly edging out the birth of my daughter. I carved a design into the flesh of my leg commemorating my joy at making the podcasts, and released the squadron of pigeons I had planned to eat in frustration had I failed yet again to make the podcast. Correspondingly, I ate one whole goose, every single feather & joint and to this day I annoint the spaces right behind my ears with rendered goosefat in the hopes of making the podcast once again.

Probably thinking of the goyim expression "futzing around" which is a minced oath version of "fucking around", so oddly, it is surprisingly close. Although, if my grandmother heard me say "putzing around", she would probably give me a zetz.

Which just goes to show, people from Canada shouldn't try to sound like New Yorkers, they're only going to embarrass themselves.
BUT... Listen up haters, LN's stuff is fabulous, and there's a lotta you putzes SHOULD be checking out the fine offerings from your fellow MeFiers over at MetaFilter Music! (Which, by the way, must always be abbreviated as MeFiMu).

I mostly ignore MeFiMu*, and even I know LN has a lovely voice. Get up with it, as some black fellow with a trumpet and octagonal spectacles allegedly said.

And ND¢, any capo shoved up any MeFiMusicers asses will be removed and clamped onto your nose forthwith, to the accompaniment of furiously pounding drums!

Metro ran a review of it a few days ago, and I must say I'm mildly pessimistic about the show simply because their Christine Daaé doesn't fit my idea of her at all - that is, she isn't what I would call drop-dead gorgeous. But I'm certain the music and the plot will make up for it. :) *hyped*

Well I'm sorry - I can't stay quiet just out of some crazy "respect" thing. I can, however, remain silent because my tongue and vocal cords were bitten out by a stoat, many a year ago, back when stoats roamed the Earth. So, in summary, if you want to widen your entry criteria and buy me and my stoats a plane ticket, we'd be happy to come.
