Metafilter minus Garfield minus Garfield February 26, 2008 3:05 PM   Subscribe

This shouldn't have been deleted.

Sure, on paper, you'd say we don't need multiple FPPs covering every facet the apparently vibrant subculture of removing things from Garfield. But still...it wasn't a double. It wasn't the same link, it wasn't the same concept, the previous link was two years in the past, and it seemed like everyone who had called it out as a double initially had recanted. It wasn't a duplicate of previously posted content and it shouldn't have been deleted as a double.

I love that post with a fiery passion. The quickie chat was really more of an epic Dragonball Z style showdown, and let me tell you something: my kung fu is pretty goddam awesome.

On the other hand, I thought it was a double at first too and almost deleted it myself.

Skorgu, it's actually a shiny brass lever with a pneumatic dial next to it. Why? To annoy people who find steampunk annoying.

Not a double but Meh compared to previous Garfield-sans-Garfield, which literate folks already knew.
posted by klangklangston at 3:19 PM on February 26, 2008

Actually, it wasn't deleted. It was just a metafilter post about Garfield where the entire post about Garfield was removed to surreal comedic effect. Cool!

"Garfield Christ" has a nice ring to it. I'm gonna grab an electronic copy of the New Testament and give it a search-and-replace, maybe.

Well, that's that then. Since this thread is about to be closed, can I just bring to everyone's attention the fact that hermitosis only needs another 70 favorites before he has to make good on his promise to disable his account. C'mon people! We can do it!

Then Garfield was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by Odie. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Cat of Jon, tell these stones to become lasagna."

Garfield answered, "It is written: 'Cat does not live on lasagna alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of Jon.'"

Fableicious!

Eh, I'm not exactly sure why I would want to get rid of hermitosis, or reward his arguable attention whoring.

How will MetaFilter without hermitosis compare to Garfield without Garfield?
posted by Sys Rq at 4:15 PM on February 26, 2008

Has this ever happened before? Or are we in completely new territory here? Will we now have MeTa fights about whether deleted thread should have been undeleted? What's next? Deleted, undeleted, deleted AGAIN!!! Will it stay deleted???? There's a MeTa flag on the play! Mods are conferring. They want a replay. (We'll be right back after this!) OK! the mods have reviewed the tape and we have decision! Upon review, the call is reversed, the thread is undeleted!! But wait, here's another mod not yet heard from...
posted by beagle at 4:17 PM on February 26, 2008

There have been a few delete-metatalk-undelete episodes before, yeah; nowhere near the number of threads that haven't been undeleted, though.
posted by cortex (staff) at 4:24 PM on February 26, 2008

Having come to this late and having seen the original post and having found myself amused by it, then having to wonder why it was deleted and then having found out that it wasn't, the last few minutes have been an emotional roller-coaster, albeit one of less-than-cataclysmic proportions.

No, no. You favorite a post about Gore when it does matter, and I'll fave a post about Nader when it doesn't matter.

posted by KokuRyu at 9:26 PM on February 26, 2008

From the thread: You could have headed off a lot of gotcha by putting that in the original post. But you've probably figured that out by now.

Yes, lesson learned. Sorry for the confusion.

I love how everyone piles on with the double post accusations, and then when it turns out they're wrong, it's the poster that is made to apologise for not having pre-emptively pointed out that his post was not a double (which he even did, in the third comment of the thread, you bastards!)
