Or do I have to be in the cabal? May 18, 2008 10:05 AM   Subscribe

Apologies if this was discussed elsewhere, but... why is there a best answer marked in an anonymous thread...?

The poster originally submitted non-anonymously, but then had privacy-related regrets and asked us to anonymize it; apparently, they'd marked an answer as best before that happened.

Huh. Fascinating.

Thanks for the speedy reply :)

Although cortex was offered $10,000, this part of the genie won't go back into the bottle?

I love how krautland compared running an internet pr0n business to running a drycleaner or a car wash.

What's so unusual about that?

"Can you get these stains off my slacks?"

"Sure. Take them off."

KokuRyu writes "I love how krautland compared running an internet pr0n business to running a drycleaner or a car wash."

In response to quite a bit of teeth gnashing that the current owners of the images must be perverted, asshole, greedy pieces of shit. Really from the point of view of dealing with the owner what difference is there between a person running an image provider (even pornographic) and a drycleaner or car wash owner? Assuming the owner is beneath you is at best counter productive.

dear phire,

there is a best answer in that thread because my answer fucking rocked.

your welcome,
krautland.

p.s. KokuRyu: I went to art school in los angeles. anyone thinking of these guys in any other terms clearly hasn't spend any time in the valley or is believing a lot of hype.

Actually, it did. Kudos.

It was a pretty solid answer. Too bad you're wrong about 2257 law (I only know because it's a big part of my job).

I am? it's not on appeal? damn. thanks for letting me know.

Nekkid pix do not equal p0rn.
posted by JJ86 at 6:56 AM on May 19, 2008

Yeah, part of the problem is that it's unsettled law at the moment, with none of the other districts agreeing to hear cases right now. At least 2257 prosecutions have dropped off too, but there's a real reluctance from porn producers to go further in challenging the law. And I think that Congress has 2257 regulations as a pretty low priority right now.

The law is totally retarded though, especially given the original remit of protecting children from exploitation.

Damn straight. Before it can be considered porn, at least one participant needs to be covered in maple syrup, another needs to be wearing a viking helmet and holding a riding crop, and the midget needs to be dressed like a naughty nurse. Or a firefighter.

Only then can it be called good porn.

Yeah, actually I'd say the life of your local drycleaner may well be in many ways far more cutting edge.

I moved to LA to go to art school when I was 18, during the time where the VHS porn biz was *just* getting started... so my friends and I had just about every skanky porn producer in town following us down the street trying to recruit us. As a small town girl alone in the big city for the first time, I was fresh meat. I was way too smart for my own good though so they always ended up disappointed. Still, I got to know a lot more about the porn biz than I ever expected to just because I readily had friends in all walks of life in my 20s.

Anyhow, a few years ago I worked with a young guy in the Bay area who really idealized the porn business and how glamorous porn stars must be to date. Finally I got sick of hearing about it so I asked him, "Have you ever MET a porn star?" and he got really offended, thinking I was going to put him in his place and tell him how great I am because I have. But on the contrary, the porn stars I've met were some of the most troubled, confused, lost girls I'll ever know. And frankly, your average drycleaner probably leads a more glamorous life than most people who make adult film their career. Despite what cable documentaries might show, it's a pretty mundane business when it comes to the ins & outs of it.*

*Yeah, pun intended.

yeah, seeing naked people gets mundane very quickly. even naked people in full-body makeup.

the art school comment was mainly there because it resulted in me first pa'ing on film sets (well, music videos mostly) and later doing still photography. and then someone walked up to me and asked if I was available on the weekend for double rate and a month later I walked in on a guy shooting a massive syringe into his cock. I think that was my sixth or so shoot. and yes, I have been to that house with the pink flamingos in the garden that everyone in the valley has shot in.

oh yeah, if there's anyone from palomar still browsing the webbernet... you fucks still owe me 130 bucks.

Oh good. Now I can say my joke answer to that question, which was that she needs to get Mr. Carlson, Johnny and Venus to break into that photographer's studio and steal the negatives.

Oddly enough, my dry cleaner has autographed pictures of porn stars on the wall. I've long suspected some sort of conflux between the two industries.
posted by malocchio at 6:29 AM on May 20, 2008

Why would he autograph their pictures?
posted by cortex (staff) at 6:58 AM on May 20, 2008

Well, I always assumed that the porn stars were the people doing the autographing, just as I also assumed that the dry cleaner was the person doing the cleaning.

I could be horribly mistaken about any of this.
posted by malocchio at 10:58 AM on May 20, 2008

A dry cleaner is just a laundry service that has a proper roof.

I know some guys who rented a booth at Saturday Market to run a wet cleaners, but business was slow so they ended up folding.
