It's mostly fear in my case. True story:
When I wrote my one and only FPP, it was a dark and stormy night (not unlike tonight). Every so often I would hear a roar of thunder over the clicking and clacking of the keys on my keyboard, and lightning would fill the room, casting spooky shadows everywhere. I couldn't shake this weird feeling that something was wrong, but I posted it anyway.
Shortly after that, the power went out, and I headed to the basement. As I walked through the Great Hall, I passed by the portrait of my great-great-grandfather Reginald T. Cartwright III, and it seemed like his eyes were moving, but I figured I was just seeing things. When I got to the basement my hair stood up on end, and my dog Sparky started growling at something.
Anyway, to make a long story short, it turned out that there was an escaped mental patient ax-murderer in my backseat, the calls coming from inside my own house, and when I woke up the next morning there was a steel hook on my door handle. Also, when I went to return her sweater, they told me the girl that I met had been dead for 30 years! posted by burnmp3s at 11:47 AM on June 4 [5 favorites]

It's because of fear that I hardly ever post.
But not because I'm worried about being mocked or scorned or whatever, I fear that one day I will put together an FPP that is so sublime, so... flawless, that nothing will ever approach it's brilliant perfection.
All subsequent posts will be held up to it and they will be found wanting, this will demoralize the rest of the community to such a degree that they will just give up and eventually the blue will be a barren wasteland, years out of date, totally unread and unloved.
I worry that one day, I will post something so good that it will kill Metafilter.

Yeah, I'm not really a fan of Dave, his comments are short, pointless, and content-free — like youtube comments but with sentences, spelling, and grammar. The worst is when he comments in MetaTalk about matters of self-policing — he's pretty much always dead wrong and a dick about it — the paulsc of metatalk. posted by blasdelf at 2:26 PM on June 4
Ah, he's a good guy and seems interested in interesting things judging by his posts to Metafilter. He just needs to stop acting like he has a vested interest in how things play out here. posted by Burhanistan at 2:28 PM on June 4
We were thinking about closing this thing up if it got ugly, but it seems mostly to have not gotten ugly, so let's keep it up with the not-getting-ugly, okay?
I'd say that gman, if you read this, maybe take heed: a little less easy on the trigger and raising the bar a bit higher for what you decide is worth a post will probably turn the whole deletion-streak thing around. Win-win.

Tell me about it, I mean, Colin was one of the best legislators Thunder Creek ever had up until the time he had his wife brutally murdered.
I wasn't expecting that comment here. I was driving from a business lunch with my boss last year past the house that murder took place in (when I would have been under ten years old). The boss lived in the area, and could remember the police cars from the night it happened. A pretty heated argument regarding Thatcher's conviction ensued -- that crime exposed a lot of fault lines, and tore at a lot of wounds in Regina and Saskatchewan generally.
When Thatcher got out of jail a year or two ago, he received threats and people would see him at football games and gossip about it. I can't imagine too many things which would bring up that kind of heat 20 some odd years later.
I read the book Thatcher wrote but don't remember the title. Thatcher wrote one of the most remarkable books I have ever read, in the sense that he couldn't even create a sympathetic portrayal of himself and yet for some reason they still like him in Moose Jaw/Thunder Creek. posted by Deep Dish at 10:36 PM on June 4
