From whatever mod deleted it, I just wondered why my repsonse to this post was deleted, and what exactly is so offensive about it that it needed to be removed. A Mefi mail is fine, but if you want it public that's OK too. Thank you. Truly, I don't care about the deletion, but am truly interested about the policy/ethics involved.

Apparently, you want it public. Mefimail is two ways.

To be fair, jessamyn did tell him to "take [it] to Metatalk".

Assuming that is the comment in question, of course.

Frankly, I just wondered what was in the head of the person who deleted it at the time and why they did it. I don't give crap if anyone else hears it or not. I was genuinely curious.

Assplodes...FAIL....whatever, you want to throw some very tired internet cliches at a valid question, well then that's just a waste of your time and everyone's. Job done.

timsteil, I didn't see yr comment, but I've had qite a few deleted that I didn't really understand, but I just figured I had inadvertently crossed a line. of course I have, on occasion deliberately crossed the line.
Was yr reply a direct, non-snarky answer to the (to me weird) question OP posed?
A lot of this stuff talking about how the girl in question is an ass is not much help, except maybe for an ego boost.
Thank God I'm not a mod, I was surprised the question stayed.
But probably yr comment added nothing, and probably more than your comment was deleted?
I'd suggest letting it roll. Really, what's the big deal? And I'm not trying to be a smart ass. I'm just failing to see the big, or even little, deal here.

well shit, here's yr anwser:
"[comment removed - do NOT turn this thread into a meta-argument about ignorance and predjudice - feel free to take that to metatalk, thank you]"
And here's a he-man hug.

This is a weird thread, but that was a weird question. It strikes me as unlikely that the poster was honestly wondering whether or not he was responsible for the Holocaust.

I can't speak to what exactly jessamyn or cortex were thinking, but keep in mind the question covers a really touchy subject and there were half a dozen (or more) comments that crossed a line. Here is your answer to the question:

"Tell her to take a good look at what happened to the country of Palestine, and give her the pot/kettle treament."

The question was why did a woman call him responsible for the holocaust just because he was german. The question wasn't "what should I tell her to begin/continue an argument that is possibly inflammatory?" Your comment didn't answer the question and just fanned the flames of a fight about all the issues of WWII linked to stuff today.

Yeah, in 5th grade, back in ' 73, I had a black kid accuse me of being a slaver. while I recall that with a chuckle every few years, I never had any moments of self-doubt about my role in the slavery of Africans in the US.
I thought that was chat-filter, but then I tend to like chat-filter.
But really, that's a legit ask me question ?
anyway, I love everybody and feel cosmic vibrations. Or perhaps thats my hemorrhoids.

I find it pretty hard to believe this guy was actually wondering if he's responsible for the holocaust. It's just so...stupid.
posted by puke & cry at 11:08 PM on June 10, 2008

I suspect "am I responsible for the holocaust" was just poor phrasing or unclear thought... he does clarify at the end of the question - "Should I feel responsible for the Holocaust in spite of my late birth because I am german", which is not the same question...

And in case you're wondering why I flagged your response, timsteil, it's because it was an unnecessarily inflammatory non-answer to the question at hand.

It read like your thought process was "Hey! Holocaust reference! Awesome! Let's turn this into a discussion of the moral equivalence between Nazi Germany's treatment of Jews and Israel's treatment of Palestinians!" Which, regardless of your position on the matter (for the record, mine is that you're a fucking idiot if you actually think they're equivalent), was not a valid answer to the question.

In 4th grade, Ricky McBride blamed me for Pearl Harbor. I didn't do it so I socked him in the nose.

Without warning, I'll bet.

Personally, I am responsible for peoplekinds original fall from grace. Occasionally I sit on a Louisville slugger vertically, but it's becoming counter productive, as I've grown to relish those penitence sessions.

Oh, Ricky McBride knew it was coming. He was just waiting for an excuse to get involved in the schoolyard rumble.

That askme question was like the world's stupidest can of gasoline waiting for a match - don't feel bad because you got sucked into it - you posted exactly the type of response they were looking for.

I wouldn't touch it with a 100 foot pole.

A valid question to mefi-mail a mod with, not post a metatalk question about. Which is where you went wrong, by suggesting they mefi-mail you, when you should have just mefi-mailed them in the first place.

I guessing that woman didn't really think krautland was responsible for the Holocaust, she just wasn't into him. Probably because he's the kind of dude who goes around asking people if they think he's responsible for the Holocaust.

Matt pretty much hit it, I think, and timsteil seems happy, so yeah, let's close this up. tim, the folks who are pointing out that posting a metatalk thread to tell us we can email you is weird are right. No harm done, but next time send us a note in the contact form if you want email; Metatalk doesn't have to be the first step, and in this case doesn't seem like it should have been at all.
