not maine, oregon, let's meet in portland July 15, 2008 6:13 AM   Subscribe

Portland Oregon, let's meet up Friday or Saturday!

I'll be in Portland from tonight til Sunday night on something that I'm calling a vacation. I'd like to see Portlanders. I'm staying in SE and have a nice place where I could host people, or we could meetup someplace downtownish or someplace else. Who is around this weekend? Hint: the answer is not cortex/mathowie, alas.

Also, side note, the All Girl Summer Fun Band is playing a free show tomorrow after work which I also plan to attend.

Wow, AGSFB is still around?

I'm in SE. Friday is my birthday, so Sat. would be better for me. Too bad I'm pathologically shy.

Most other weekends I would definitely be down, but I have family in town this weekend, so 'tis not to be for me.

I fly out on Saturday afternoon, but if there's a friday meetup, I can try and make it.

I'm around, but Friday night is out for me. Would love to see you, jessamyn!

I can probably make either day. I'm not super outgoing myself, but if enough of us get together I can make awkward small talk with large groups easier than small ones. And the last meet-up was fun.

Saturday's slightly better for me, but Friday is doable also.

something that I'm calling a vacation.
Interesting. I've never had any trip to the location of the Home Office that wasn't a business trip (but then, most of my working life, I've worked AT the Home Office, so I haven't had many opportunities). Then again, some Home Offices are at better locations than others.

NUTS. I'm swinging through Portland on my way to Seattle, but only Thursday night and I strongly suspect that I'm going to be entirely too busy/knackered to make it back for Friday or Saturday, although Saturday is marginally more likely. Also: holy run-on sentence, Batman!

I'm down if it's on a Saturday...

I'm a solid maybe. Most of Saturday I think I'm at an extended not-quite-in-law BBQ (my girlfriend's brother's fiancée's sister and nephew are visiting from Quebec), but that evening may be free, and I think Friday's wide open. So, I'll be watching this space for updates and will show if I'm able. One doesn't want to miss the opportunity to meet the amazing jessamyn, and potentially The Founder, along with any Stumptown MeFites who didn't make the last meetup. And yeah, introversion thy name is mumkin, but that's hardly a surprising trait in the world of internet dweebage, so, forgive me in advance if I'm not a wellspring of small or large talk.

All dweebs and introverts should not worry at all. A house party meetup means much less hollering over bar noise and if you just want to sit around and go laptopping, I think there's wifi there. Except for big NYC/SFO meetups, most of the ones that I've been to are just casual hang out and eat/drink affairs.

Wendell, did it ever occur to you that the Home Office is in Portland because it's where I like to go on vacation?

Saturday looks slightly better at this point -- I'm in an airport en route -- so let's call it by the end of the day today and then we can work out details. If anyone knows some non-MeTa-reading MeFites, feel free to alert them to this thread.

I am super jealous you get to see AGSFB live. For free.

Now I need to go listen to them.

Okay let's plan on Saturday, maybe it will be a smallish thing. My friend lives in SE. We could do beer/pizza here or potluck or go to someplace nearby. Who is in for a not-terribly-late Saturday night thing?

I am.

I'm down.

I could possibly make it after 9ish, but I don't know if that's not-terribly-late or not.

By the way, do you know what part of SE you'll be in?
posted by turbodog at 3:14 PM on July 17, 2008

Okay! Why don't we plan on a just-after-dinner thing. Seven? I'll have dessert, coffee and beer and people can bring more dessert, coffee and beer. I'm staying at 3813 SE 67th Ave. There's ample street parking and it's right on the #9 bus. There's a nice yard to hang out in, a nice inside if it's rainy and a chalkboard wall to write shoutouts on.

I'll put it in the sidebar. Can someone who is NOT ME MeMail the Portland people and just direct them to this thread? I'm at 508-415-9074 if people need last minute directions, advice or wiseass remarks. Sound good?

mumkin, you should come. i'm pretty sure i'll be there, and i think i may even be able to drag my spouse out of the studio.

there. and there.

I'll be there if I can. BBQ thingy begins at 4, so, you know, it's just a question of how soon one can light out with propriety.

I dare say this is a weak showing for Portland. Summer wreaks havoc on availability, I guess.

I do believe I'm a gonna go procure myself a shiny new bicycle just so I can swing by and say hi.
posted by bhance at 11:03 AM on July 19, 2008

I'm not going to be able to make it. I'm feeling rather under the weather; I don't know if it's some sort of allergy flair up or a summer cold or what, but I'd rather not inflict it upon my fellow MeFites. I hope you guys have a good time.
posted by Caduceus at 1:44 PM on July 19, 2008

I have a six pack of delicious beer, cookies [homemade and not] apples and cheese and coffee and misc other stuff. People should probably bring what they'd like to drink, there's a nice backyard for sitting in. Due to incredibly ridiculous planning on my part, I have to scoot out to my redeye flight around 10:30 so it will be an early night but I hope people can make it.

Hey thanks to everyone who came out! I'm waiting for my plane at the airport enjoying some of Portland's FREE WIFI. I'm pretty sure we took almost no photos. Special thanks to everyone for helping me clean up and to mimo for the swell pen.
