I haven't done this in a while, but: This post sucks. It should be culled.

It's a lazy back-formation based on a CNN bit that doesn't actually have any meat to it. It will be a dead link soon enough, and the "blog" itself has only a couple of entries and nothing recent.

I don't think Wallstreet1929 is a bad person or anything, but this post is at best just failing at being provocative.

Agreed. Newsfilter, deadwhitechickfilter, etc. Also "Laci Mom not happy" is like two or three standard deviations down from the general level of discourse around here.

I guess my real beef was that there didn't seem to be anything to be learned once you'd read the text of the post—Scott Peterson does indeed have something moderately similar to a web log. Laci Peterson's mom does, in fact, not like that.

Serious but non-snarky question: why do people care about keeping metafilter "pure" at all? It's a list of links. You don't like a link, go to the next one. If it's posted, somebody thought it was good enought to post, and with 60000 members (or whatever), odds are that there are at least another ten who will enjoy the post for whatever their reasons.

It's not like we're compiling The Canon, the Only Authorized Version of 'Teh Intarwerbs' that will last down through time when all Fark and Reddit and Digg are dust.

I have almost never flagged anything, preferring to ignore or if really necessary, refute, and I don't think I'm missing much. I honestly don't understand the the desire to "cull" a post.

Look, I signed up for MetaFilterPlus so that I could delete an FPP a month. Otherwise, what's the point?

(I did flag it earlier today, then came back to see it still there, decided to articulate why I didn't like it and bring it up in case the mods had been putting out fires elsewhere. If they'd looked at it and decided not to delete, they'd say so and I'd mutter about stavros being right and go back to screwing around elsewhere.)

High signal-to-noise ratio benefits everyone. The reason most of us are here, rather than Digg or Fark, is because we like the general editorial policies. Seeing crap on the front page lowers the bar; I didn't like that post and I said so.

To elaborate, perhaps less harshly ... you would have achieved your goal by sending an IM or an email to the admins. The post would have probably been just as deleted, but you wouldn't have perpetuated the idea that petulantly stomping your feet in Metatalk is the proper way to deal with something you don't like on the front page, when flagging it should have been enough.

Orthogonality, because that way is the path to perdition and mediocrity. Some actually do believe in at least aspiring to "best of the web" quaint as that notion might seem. And the stuff tkolar said about "filter."

flagging it should have been enough

Dave Faris, I so often agree with you but part ways on this issue, guy. I think there is a value in the discussion that ensues from peer review and self policing. While I have been on record numerous times saying that I disagree with people trying to nix entire topics (politics, news, controversial issues), these posts should be held to a high standard. I think it's appropriate to bring some discussions to metatalk - reading the back and forth is how partly how I formulated the idea of what does and doesn't make a good post back in my newbie days.

Petulant foot-stomping? Whining? I know, Mr. Faris, that your unique constitution imputes an acerbic and petty tone to everything you observe (truly, it's the only way your responses make sense sometimes), but I wish that wouldn't get in the way of your ability to read and reason. I did flag the post, as I noted. Several hours later, nothing had happened. I decided, as the youth speak, to call it out. I gave my reasoning, people agreed, the post was deleted. I could have IMed a mod, but by posting "in public," I'm conceding that hey, I might be wrong—people might love this post and explain to me how babby is made why it should stay and why I'm being unreasonable.

But that didn't happen, did it?

I know! Good on the mods for getting them!

Oh, you didn't mean it that way? Why, whatever else could you have been coyly hinting at?

Because if you were really against petulant whining, wouldn't you have, you know, stopped your meta-carp here?

What are the other possibilities? You want the Scott Peterson blog post back? You want to discourage me or others from using MeTa to complain about posts?

The former's unlikely, the latter's fairly futile.

Or do you just want someone to take your opinion seriously and validate you? Because for that, you may be in the wrong place.
posted by klangklangston at 3:50 PM on July 19, 2008

No. I make the point that just because you don't like something, and because the mods were take too long for your precious self, it doesn't justify making yet another metatalk post when there's already an adequate system to handle your complaint. The fact that Jessamyn immediately bowed to your command will only encourage people with poor impulse control to make similar posts here. There's no reason to take it personally. We just disagree.

Having read RTFA, it's even more fucked up, because the real situation is vile in a way I didn't even anticipate, and I'm also willing to bet he actually does beat up his gramma and live off her Social Security. He seems like that kind of guy.
