Anyone up for another Boston-area pub trivia meetup?

So I'll only be in Boston for a few more weeks, and I'd love to have another opportunity to crush soulstrivia opponents once again. Last time, we were treated to post-victory karaoke by Admiral Haddock--who knows what list in store next time!

Here's the list of pub trivia locations. What say you?

I was just looking for an excuse to call a Boston meetup.

Are you and Horace moving?
posted by Eideteker at 2:34 PM on July 21, 2008

No, Horace gets to stay here, but my job is out of state, so I have to go back next month :(

I've only threatened to come to a meetup, but I think I'm ready. Count me in.

Perhaps... perhaps... perhaps.

My votes are for Red Line in Harvard Sq (I've never been there, tho, so I can't vouch for it) and Johnny D's in Davis Sq.
posted by blue andrea at 3:35 PM on July 21, 2008

I've been slightly underwhelmed with my limited encounters with Red Line (the bar, not the subway). I have always greatly enjoyed my visits to Johnny D's, but in fairness they've been to see Jonathan Coulton perform, and I don't think he's coming to our meetup.

Really enjoyed the last one at Tommy D.'s. Another one sounds good, especially if there's karoke right afterwards.

... mmmmmmaybe.

posted by grapefruitmoon at 6:08 PM on July 21, 2008

YES.

Ahem. I would greatly enjoy to see everyone again. Name it and I'll be there (within reason)... Mondays and Wednesdays are probably best for me.

Also, for those of you on the fence, we WILL WIN. Discourse and Horace are both Jeopardy champions, so we've got two ringers against a room full of semi-drunken louts (plus the few louts that will be playing with them).

Mondays are not so good for me. Any other day of the week is fine.
posted by DiscourseMarker at 6:29 PM on July 21, 2008

Thursdays are generally not good nights for me (standing dinner engagement). Anything else is fine!

If there's karaoke, even better.
posted by Eideteker at 6:42 PM on July 21, 2008

So, a Wednesday at Tommy Doyle's in Harvard Square, maybe? This week or next week? (Trivia starts at 8pm, we need to be there by about 7 probably to get a table, 6 people per team.)
posted by DiscourseMarker at 7:05 PM on July 21, 2008

Oh, and is this week or next week better for people?
posted by DiscourseMarker at 7:05 PM on July 21, 2008

oh I am just too dumb
posted by DiscourseMarker at 7:06 PM on July 21, 2008

Another vote for Wednesdays. Karaoke scares me. Me doing karaoke will scare you.
posted by cocoagirl at 7:07 PM on July 21, 2008

I'd like to attend!

Weds/Thurs are best for me.
posted by pxe2000 at 7:09 PM on July 21, 2008

I'm pretty regularly at Johnny D's on Monday nights, but it does get crowded - especially in the summer.

Orleans, also in Davis Square, a block from Johnny D's, does Trivia on Wednesdays.

Perhaps next week would be better so we could reach critical mass?
posted by enfa at 7:17 PM on July 21, 2008

Wednesday would be ok for me, but Thursday would be a hell of a lot better. And next week would be better than this one.

And even more better would be if I got paid to eat ice cream, but you can't have everything I 'spose.
posted by grapefruitmoon at 7:23 PM on July 21, 2008

Next Wednesday, at Tommy Doyle's. 7pm. Sounds good to me.
posted by Eideteker at 7:56 PM on July 21, 2008

I agree with next Wednesday. Tommy Doyle's was fine, but a little loud, and they're very strict about the 6-people-to-a-team rule.
posted by backseatpilot at 5:09 AM on July 22, 2008

Mememe. My husband will probably want to come too. Pretty much any night is OK with me, although Tuesdays are sometimes bad.

I'd love to go next week.
posted by healthytext at 6:41 AM on July 22, 2008

Ok, so it looks like Wednesday July 30 is the date--I don't know anything about the other Wednesday locations on the pub trivia list, so the default seems to be Tommy Doyle's. So shall I put it on the calendar?
posted by DiscourseMarker at 8:34 AM on July 22, 2008

Yes.
posted by Eideteker at 9:43 AM on July 22, 2008

Done! Put on your thinking caps everyone, and we'll see you next week.

(Oh, and judging by last time, if anyone knows anything about, um, sports, please join the team)
posted by DiscourseMarker at 10:31 AM on July 22, 2008

Yes, I'll most likely be there! Last time, weren't we somehow rickroll'd on one of the questions?
posted by not_on_display at 10:57 AM on July 22, 2008

Oh, I am deeply into this. Which country holds the most Winter Olympics medals? Where is the highest point in the state of Connecticut? Who was the first US President sworn in using a nickname?

1. Switzerland, where the IOC headquarters are.
2. The dorms at UConn, on any given Friday night.
3. "Slappy" Washington, father of our country.

We're doomed.
posted by Horace Rumpole at 2:08 PM on July 22, 2008

Huh, I thought the answer to all three questions was "Your mom."
posted by Eideteker at 2:20 PM on July 22, 2008

Oh, I do think #3 on the above list is "Jimmy Carter."

If I can escape the western 'burbs in time, I might be up for this.

We're doomed

Reverse Engineerifying:

I'll take "Three-word answers beginning with C" for $100.

$100. Switzerland, where the IOC headquarters are.

What is a "Cuckoo Clock Country?"

"Three-word answers beginning with C" for $200.

$200. The dorms at UConn, on any given Friday night.

What is, "Coldplay, chlamydia, and cannabis?" Same for 300, Alex.

$300. "Slappy" Washington, father of our country.

Ummmm, who is... uhhh... Clarence Clemons?

Yeah, we may be in trouble here.

$100, 200, and 300? What, are you playing Jeopardy! five years ago?

Actually, I haven't watched it since around 1991, back when Alex had the moustache and dark hair. Wha'happened?!

I'd like to try to make this, but I suddenly have been enlisted onto a trivia team w/ work folks at Orleans in Davis on this very night. Damn--wish I'd seen this first!

I'll try to join, but due to my schedule, I may arrive after the competition starts. As a result, I will have to content myself with mutely boozing near the MeFi team, stealing their prize-money after their inevitable win, and then rocking you with my vocal stylings. I will accomplish the last item on the list with or without official karaoke offerings. Be warned.

I'm a sad panda. I work Wednesday nights until 9p, and I'm not usually back in the area until 9:30p or so. I might be able to stop by after work and say a quick hello, tho, if y'all are still there.

I forgot that the meet up was tonight until just now and mistakenly came home from work rather than going to Cambridge. Now that I'm home, I'm sure as hell not leaving again unless someone lights me on fire.

Go team MetaFilter!

Crap. I also won't make it, but the difference is that I purposely double-booked my evening and thought that it would all work out. I can tell you that it most decidedly did not.
posted by Plutor at 4:45 PM on July 30, 2008

That was a lot of fun, but it was almost cheating with Horace on my team.
posted by bertrandom at 7:39 PM on July 30, 2008

CHEATING? I KNEW IT!

So, yeah. "Stray lolcats" came in first with 134 points (damn them all), "Are you there God? It's Me Margret Thatcher" came in third with 118 points. We need a rematch. Soon, damnit.

late to the party.....Staff Infection with a some what respectable showing in trivia with a solo effort/partial help with from the bartender for movie pictures and half time guesses. Not the proper voice for karoke, but I applaud the effort for the Johnny Cash and other solo stage singing (back seat driver?). I'll keep an eye out for the blue shirts, choose a tune, and take down the trivia champs in an American Idol modified scoring.

Wow, was that ever fun. I swore I would get home by 11 tonight, but karaoke sucked me in. I just had to do two songs. Which songs? True, and Sober. I put a little metal into True, and a little croon into Sober, so it balances out.

Also worth mentioning, when a pretty girl asks you to dance, DO NOT BEANPLATE IT. You get up and you dance. Apologies for hemming and hawing, I am an idiot. For whatever reason, I am not afraid to make a total idiot of myself singing in front of a crowded room, but dancing in the back of an almost-empty room? Still trying to figure out the math on that one.

Anyway, I just got back to the office. I left my bike here rather than look for parking in Hahvahd Squayah, and I still have to ride home. Oh, and I'm supposed to be back here at 8 tomorrow? DAMN YOU KARAOKE!

PS WE KICKED ASS AT TRIVIA! BEST TEAM EVER! BY ONE POINT!

PPS I totally came up with our team name after my other suggestion, T, INC. was shot down.

1) That's what you call it, "beanplating"? Looked more like "sweating and stammering" to me. I mean, have you never danced to Rick Astley before?
2) I AM NOT A GIRL! How many times do I have to tell you!?
3) Mission accomplished. Awaiting further instructions.
