You'll have had your Meetup Edinburgh -this August ! (Silvery Robot Men not included)

a follow up to this thread -

Edinburgh - home of the international festival and fringe and all that - I know everybody wants to avoid all that nonsense so I'm suggesting monday the 25th of august with the sheeps heid and the secret gardens in duddingston as an out of the way place - the theatre company that has the gardens will be off that day - or we could change the day, trot along and watch the director get drunk afterwards, proclaiming to everyone in the pub that he is king james the sixth of scotland - it's your call people - a garden pub combo or a day change and a garden theatre pub idiocy combo.

Anyway, we can try and figure out of the way from the fest kind of thing - something nice without too much of a trek, as i love you all dearly and wish to shield you from all this juggler type nonsense.

Is a Saturday inconceivable? Or is it murder on a Saturday during the festival? Anyroads, whatever day it is, if I can get off work I will head across.

Or the Sunday, by which time the entire city is a ghost town anyway.

I'm game (I'm in town for Festival FM) but you've picked possibly the most inaccessible, taxis-only location in Edinburgh.

FWIW I'll be in Edinburgh for the Festival from the 16th to early on the 24th. I'd love to join in - if you didn't mind interfering outsiders - on one of those days, Fringe schedule permitting.

I'm on holidays from the 16th to 23rd, but if there's a meetup on the 25th i'll defo try to make it.

Monday suits better for me. Weird. I've never done this before.

It's out of the way, young man - hence the location - at least it wont be blocked by jugglers and it's incredibly beautiful - believe me, you will need a breather during the festival and here we are giving it to you in an incredible act of generosity : )

I'm from Edinburgh and have worked lots of years on the festivals.

My point, really is twofold: 'out of the way' doesn't have to mean the same thing as 'a mile or more from the nearest bus', and on the weekend you suggested the Fringe is essentially over and the city is not particularly busy - which I'm trying to say obviates the need to be so obscure.
posted by genghis at 3:47 PM on July 27, 2008

Hmmm "a mile or so from the nearest bus" ???

The bus service would seem to disagree with you
.
You may be ' from edinburgh' but it seems even yourself has never been round the back of arthurs seat - which makes your need to attend all the more pressing, also we might miss hearing about your hospital radio work as well, which would be desperately sad.

Is the text "outside" of this post a reference to Irvine Welsh ("You'll have had your hole", a section of one of his books, was it Glue?) or is it just a really common scottish construction?
posted by RustyBrooks at 4:20 PM on July 27, 2008

Not sure at all if it's a common and changeable expression (you'll have had your {fill in the blank}). But I immediately thought of the radio show You'll Have Had Your Tea, with Hamish and Dougal.

If it happens any time during the week beginning the 9th, count me in.
posted by PeterMcDermott at 5:07 PM on July 27, 2008

Yeah, I remember You'll have had your tea. It's kind a joke against scottish people, right? "I don't have to feed you because you've already had tea"?
posted by RustyBrooks at 9:41 PM on July 27, 2008

It's a specifically anti-Edinburgh stereotype I believe rather than anti-Scottish. RustyBrooks has the sense of it right- the greeting of a visitor with the closed question "You'll have had your tea?" to obviate the need of offering refreshment.

I thinks it is a Scottish west coast put down of the east (not sure that anywhere outside of Scotland is Edinburgh taken to be less friendly than most places).

Doubt I'll make it back to Scotlia for the meet-up yet again, will have to try to organise a central Europe one instead. Same conundrum here of avoiding the touristy places while still being central.

The Sheep Heid pub has a website; here it is on a map. My first meet up; I shall try to be there.

My uncle used to tell a story about driving through deepest Morningside some time in the 1950s and getting lost. He stopped to ask a woman directions and was admonished "Don't you roll your window at me young man!".

By "tea" are we talking about the beverage or the evening meal?

The evening meal, eponymouse.

At least, to my understanding

I will evidently have just climbed (or been lost on) ben nevis that day, so, hoist a brew for me, folks.

As regards friendly, I've been knocking doors in the east end of glasgow all month to get people to vote for a guy (victory is so sweet!) and folk were plenty crabby about it. :)

A few ales, perhaps some skittles. Sounds good.

Pubs and gardens on the 25th sounds grand.

(Alternatively I can make most dates in August, though I have tickets to a handful of gigs that I might need to slope off for depending on the day...)

right folks this is looking good - i'll post about it again in a wee while and sort out an alternative venue if people want to vote for that and if people are still happy with the duddingston thing (which will be beautiful ) i'll sort out how to get everyone there - like a meetup bus/walk thing - it'll be worth it i promise - a free tour !
posted by sgt.serenity at 1:25 PM on July 30, 2008

duddingston works for me, happy to try somewhere new!

Oop, I thought I'd already said this: I'm in.

See you all soon-ish.
posted by jack_mo at 8:27 AM on August 7, 2008

I'm in too. I'm pretty sure I can even walk there, although I'm not sure about getting home again...

So this is where it's going to be at - we can hit the sheeps heid pub but i would also like a wee jaunt down to the secret garden (i'm thinking of bringing some drink for folks to that - whisky ? wine ? special brew ?)
i'm going to suggest a late afternoon meetup time around 3pm - if anyone has a any suggestions for time just say - its pretty easy to get to if you get the 42 bus from hanover st. - if you get lost you can call me on my mobile which is in my profile - i'm happy to walk people along if they want to meet up at the commonwealth pool as well - i can do all that historical tour spiel as we're going through arthurs seat to the pub, where hopefully there will be no theatre types screaming/declaiming of course, if you want to see a show just over the road where there's a chance a drunken director might interrupt the show with "this is fuckin shite !! isn't it ? ISNT IT ?" to the audience members - we could change times : )

Shame it wasn't two weeks earlier as we were in walking distance of Arthur's Seat. (Clark Street? North Clark Street?) My wife went swimming in said Commonwealth Pool and climbed the Seat.

I only actually did three days in town, so I wasn't overly exposed to robots or jugglers. The crowds were hellacious though.

Next week, I'll be in Iceland, so I don't mind so much that I'm missing out.

Blue Lagoon meet up, anyone?

Would love to fly over for the meetup, but can't. Will definately be at the next one. If anyone's coming over to Dublin we should have a mefi meetup here in Ireland this autumn.

Aww just stumbled upon this, and you had me until the 3pm start - I work right at the bottom of Arthur's Seat so within staggering distance, but won't be out of work til about 8pm. Would've been my first meet up too.. never mind, next time.
posted by penguin pie at 10:46 AM on August 24, 2008

I'll be there. Probably a bit later than 3pm, though.

If past meetups are anything to go by, we'll just be hitting our stride by 8pm. Join us!

Also, please tell me it's sunny in Edinburgh today. (Because it's not sunny in Glasgow, the weather's so bad lunchtime looks like twighlight in December.)

Also also - the sarge's post above seems slightly unclear: we're meeting at the pub at 3, right?
posted by jack_mo at 3:57 AM on August 25, 2008

It's a bit dreech through here too, but doesn't look like it's actually going to piss down. I hope.

Pub at three was my reading - though I have to get some work done before I mosey on over, so I'm afraid what time I arrive will depend on how long it takes me to find my work ethic... or to just give up, I guess.

the meetup was very well attended - 4 people and a wasp : )

here's a wee picture

luckily there was some sort of real ale festival on at the venue with beer a pound a pint .....

Why, that would be me! And that's me fave Harrington (a Baracuta G3, clothes fans).

Anyway, all my photos came out rubbish. The least-rubbish are here: 1, 2, 3.
