PDX Meetup in Sept August 29, 2008 10:33 AM   Subscribe

PDX Meetup? I missed the last one. And the one before that. And I really want to make it to one, really I do.

Any Saturday in Sept, 5ish, close-in Eastside, downtown or NW. Suggestions anyone?

I'll totally tag this so I don't forget it, like last time.

Heck yeah, I'm down. The May meetup at the Green Dragon seemed like a pretty good setting, so we could always do that again. Great beer list, lots of open space.

I'm in, and second the Green Dragon.

I'll try to show up for real this time - I came pretty late to the last one and then had a sudden onset of shyness and didn't go over to the metafilter table.
posted by ugf at 10:49 AM on August 29, 2008

Aw, ugf! Don't be shy, we're a friendly bunch of idiots.

Booyah! I'm finally back in town too, so count me & bunnycakes in.

(ps: the green dragon has absinthe now. w00t.)

I'm fairly new to MeFi and I'd be glad to join in, assuming shyness doesn't get the best of me! I'd vote for somewhere downtown or NW, and any Saturday except the 27th.

I can shoot for it if it's not Sept 6th or the 13th.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 11:36 AM on August 29, 2008

Why don't we aim for Saturday the 20th, then? That gives us some lead time, and 20 is a nice round number too.
posted by cortex (staff) at 11:48 AM on August 29, 2008

I miss the Rose and Raindrop.
posted by dersins at 11:51 AM on August 29, 2008

I think the 13th works a little better for me, but the 20th is OK if it works better for others.

I'm in for PDX IX/XX. I was sorry to have missed jessamyn's house party.

The Dragon was a good spot, as a reconfigurable space that could accommodate twenty-odd peeps in a fairly user-friendly manner. Suggestions of other places to meet-up should be similarly flexible, or have a meeting room like the *sniff* much-lamented Rose & Raindrop... I'm blanking on west-side spots that are as friendly, but I don't spend much time over there these days. Does the Goose Hollow Inn lend itself to meetups? I haven't been in years and years, but it's nicely MAXable, and kindof an institution. (The taps at the Green Dragon are so much better, though.)

The Lucky Lab in NW is a pretty good size and open, but you have to like Lucky Lab beer.
posted by fiercekitten at 2:30 PM on August 29, 2008

What's the noise level like? I've only been to the one in SE, but the meetup we had there a couple years back was so goddam noisy you couldn't hear each other speak.
posted by cortex (staff) at 2:34 PM on August 29, 2008

Loud, like you'd expect from a former Freightliner garage.
posted by fiercekitten at 2:44 PM on August 29, 2008

I would love to come, but I just moved down to Salem to go to law school. Although I'm sure by the 20th I'll be so desperate to be some place other than the library or my apartment that I just might make the trip. Because I know everyone cares so much, I'll give it some serious thought and keep y'all posted.
posted by friendlyjuan at 3:06 PM on August 29, 2008

I care like nobody's business, bucko. If you come, I'll tell you about the time I dressed up as a tree and stormed the Capital.

so that was you?

Another vote for the 20th as I will be pedaling feverishly over Whidbey Island the weekend of the 12th.

In other news, the Green Dragon recently opened an outdoor beer garden that, with some streetside tables, gives plenty of breathing room even when a crowd is there. So consider this another vote for the Green Dragon as well.
posted by turbodog at 4:25 PM on August 29, 2008

Hmmm....we will have out-of-state non-MeFi people visiting from Madison on the 20th, boo. I'll try to sneak away at least long enough to have a beer or two if I can and to say hello!
posted by ugf at 4:52 PM on August 29, 2008

You could always bring them along and then apologize profusely to them later on. But sneaking away would be okay too.
posted by cortex (staff) at 5:04 PM on August 29, 2008

This is fantastic! I will definitely be there to meet some MeFi royalty.

Hey, meetup! I had to miss Jessamyn's houseparty, which sucked, because I wanted to meet her.

I think the 20th works for me. I also vote for the Green Dragon, because I like their beer, and I haven't found an excuse to go there since the last meetup.

As excuses go, I find "saturday" is a good one.

I live up in Washington, so driving for 20 minutes to drink alone doesn't really cut it. If I'm going to make that drive there needs to be socializing, too.

So Sept 20 at the Green Dragon around 5pm. Can I put this on the sidebar? Hmmm...

Someone else is going to have to put this on the side bar. I'm not qualified yet.

hey, I had such a good time with you all down at the Green Dragon last time, I might make my way down again if the situation works out.

Ah crappers, unless another hurricane keeps us away from N.O., I will be there instead of PDX on the 20th. FOILED AGAIN!!1!

I've never met you people. It seems like it might be fun. I'll head down there after the hair appointment - think you'll still be around at 6-ish?
posted by oreonax at 1:21 PM on September 16, 2008

oreonax, there's a chance we'll still be around at 11-ish. Definitely come on down after you get your hair appointed.

You lucky pdxsters with your green dragons and your microbrews. I'll wear my green dragon shirt here in miserable, sunny LA in a show of solidarity.

You know, I have been debating this for weeks in my reclusive book-wormy head, and I think I am actually going to come. Will someone be wearing the official tee-shirt or do I just call out random mefi handles until someone hears me and invites me to play?
posted by Jenny is Crafty at 9:27 PM on September 19, 2008

We'll probably have a little sign sitting on a table. But shouting names would be fun, so go for it.

Just look for hippies and people in dork glasses... oh wait, that won't help.

I had every intention of attending this, but I ended up helping my brother move today, and now I'm too exhausted for socializing. Sigh. Maybe next time.

Have fun!

Someone has to order some Ardbeg 10 for Cortex, or other decent scotch (have they gotten Lagavulin 16 yet? I asked them to bring some in last time I was there).

I wasn't able to drive down today, I needed to visit with a friend leaving on Tuesday to teach in Ethiopia for a year.

It was a good time! Sorry to you all who couldn't make it; we should have another again soon.

dersins and alan look eerily similar.

In case anyone was wondering.
posted by Caduceus at 9:31 PM on September 20, 2008

I don't see it- but to me, dersins looks like dersins. Alan looks like... someone mistrustworthy. I can't put my finger on it.

A good time had by, in theory, all.

After conferring with mrzarquon and google just now, I'm guessing what I ended up actually drinking was Balvanie Doublewood. Whatever the hell it was, it was excellent.
posted by cortex (staff) at 10:47 PM on September 20, 2008

Oh, Metafilter, it would seem that you and I will never meetup.

After a marathon hair thing (from 3:30 to 9:10 pm) I only just now (at 10:51 pm) made it home.

And now, it's already done and I've only just started the dishwasher.

Bah and Humbug.

Maybe next time.

Good to know, Will. I guess.

Hey! I demand pictures! At least if anyone took one that doesn't make me look like a tool. Which would be a change of pace.
posted by Caduceus at 10:48 AM on September 21, 2008

My pictures are up! They are not particularly awesome, but they are, in fact, pictures, and I think I got everyone.

And wobh, I've thought about it and decided that Ancient of Days was really more of a prequel.

That's an epic hair engagement, oreonax. Hope you can make it out next time

The Alan/Dersins similarity is actually part of a long con, the details of which I can't get into. I mention it here only to cover the possibility that I die of some lung related chalk dust disease.

Oh yeah, serious toolness in the picture of me. I swear I don't look retarded in real life, but cameras always catch at the worst times.
posted by Caduceus at 12:33 PM on September 21, 2008

One drawback to the long-bench thing we did this time compared to the tables in the main area last time is there was really not much room to move photographically. I was shooting with a portrait lens and could pretty much only get you in frame from my chair at the end of the table there.

Clearly, seating tactics need to be part of your meetup prep.

Aw nuts, I did not even see this meetup post. Looks like you all had a swell time! Wish I could've gone.

Hey! The meetup was really fun (and no I did not get freaked out to much). The currant hard cider was great, and as an added bonus I may know a long lost relative of bhance...who knew! I dont have a flicker account, but here is another chalkboard-table picture

Of course, maybe it's really me who's the evil one....

Looking at the pictures of your Portland meetup it's obvious that it featured many more mefites than the München meetup that went on at the same time. But hanging out with rowdy Bavarian farmers in Lederhosen and Dirndl was also quite an experience I can tell you.

posted by wobh at 6:21 AM on September 21 [+] [!]

The idea that it was based on a "classic" painting, especially something by someone like Blake, wasn't really the question. It was more about the fact that some put Blake's painting on the side of a van, made it look like something from the Silver Surfer (not classic, I know, but as good a representation as I can find within 30 seconds) and then copied it onto a canvas for $555 (or, you know, vice versa)... well, that's just horrible to look at while drinking.

And it was nice to meet all of you and to get to hang out with those that I haven't seen in awhile.

Those of us sitting on the end of the table that wasn't presided over by the Zeusy Surfer were, I think, happier because of it.
