Palin thread ate my browser

Pony request: Can we please, please, please, do something to ease the burden of the Palin thread? People obviously want to talk about it and it's become sort of a default election thread. It's got to be killing the servers as well as everyone's browsers.

I know, for the past few election cycles, Matt has strenuously tried to avoid having a politics.metafilter. A standpoint which I totally understand, but I think perhaps everyone would be better served by coming up with an arena where discussion can continue without punishing our poor beleaguered tech tools.

As an aside, can someone delete the westfalia asshattery? There's no reason for that to be the thread killer that it was intended to be.

There's a new Palin thread. The old one is election dumping ground and a low-intensity conflict about abortion. It should probably be terminated.

Also, cortex or pb should upload a new activity image for that thread to the wiki.

The recent New York Times coverage is so meticulate and well-researched that it deserves its own post. Palin really is troubling news for the United States and the world in general in a lot of fascinating ways.

It was deleted a couple hours ago as far as I can tell.

Also, yeah, the thread is too big, but today there are new election-related threads that can hopefully take over discussions of new matters.

I can definitely see the point of the mods, given that four out of the ten posts on the FPP for today so far (ET) are either about Obama or Palin. At the same time, it would be good if we could periodically create a new place for "the Palin thread" since the current one is so long as to be completely unreadable.

I think we should have a politics.metafilter subsite, but every page has to have an embedded midi song, preferably ska. Ska can either lighten the mood or drive people insane.

To test it out, lets put something by The Toasters out on the 5000 comment Palin thread and see where things go.

You know, this is as good a place as any to say-having a minority opinion is not the same as crapping on a thread.

I think we are all big boys and girls here who can handle an opinion other than our own without getting the vapors.

I suspect there are more conservative folks on this site that simply do not post on threads such as that one because of how they believe they'd be treated-maybe that would be a good thing to bear in mind.
