A single link to today's issue of your favorite webcomic or cartoon series is not appropriate for a Front Page Post.

Not to say that it's never appropriate to link to something on the web that's serial in nature, but just one link to the most current instance is weak posting. If something happens in your favorite ongoing X that's so mindblowingly significant that you absolutely have to post it, at least flesh it out with some background, context, or criticism.

Can't agree with this part. None of the above can make a crappy link good. Conversely a good link needs none of the above.

If the reason the link is crappy is that it lacks background, context or criticism it can. When I click on a mystery meat link I generally just end up staring at the page thinking "What's the significant part here? What am I looking at?" Pointing your finger and shouting L@@K!! is usually insufficient. Set the scene.

This whole issue is just to distract us from the real news, which has been totally ignored by the msm: It's Rush Hashanah.

If your problem with the cartoon is that it's not good enough to be posted, that's sufficient. Don't try and make up rules like "linking to daily things is bad".

I'm writing a virus for Metafilter.

I feel like there are daily or weekly things like blogs, newspapers, magazine articles, etc. that are totally fair game, but linking to an already well known daily comic is totally different. Just because I particularly enjoyed today's Achewood doesn't mean it's ok to post it to the front page.

But I would like to have a discussion about just what a Commodore is. And how much such a thing might cost.

I'd go through it all again just for quality content like cortex's closure statement.

I can't help but agree with that. After nearly pissing myself trying to conceive of a McSweeny's/Zombo hybrid, I almost want to encourage this sort of reckless posting.

Well for what it's worth solipsophistocracy, I think that both of your Metafilter posts were shit (all two of `em), but I didn't start a MeTa thread about them.

This one wasn't my best post ever, I grant you, but wasn't call-out worthy either, I'd wager. Next time just flag it and move on.
posted by Effigy2000 at 12:23 PM on September 30, 2008

ooh, snap!

can't say i care much for the single-link comic posts (just moved on, didn't even flag) but that xkcd one was actually one of their better efforts, imho, and i wouldn't have seen it until i did one of those regular "let's kill an hour by going through all of xkcd for the past three months" marathons.

It would be marginally better if xlcd was even remotely funny, but is a callout really necessary?

Please don't do that.

solipsophistocracy was polite, didn't call you out by name, and was generally asking a question. Your response is a textbook example of "how to turn a discussion about site policy into two men shouting at each other which is pretty much how every Meta post eventually ends."

The post was okay, not great, got flagged a lot and we removed it with no hard feelings towards anyone. Brand New Year.

jessamyn, you'll be happy to know that solipsophistocracy and I have worked things out via MeMail.

Obviously I won't quote what he said, but the jist of his MeMail to me was basically a 'sorry for the callout and for the "reckless posting" remark he made, which I thought was very big of him.

As I replied to him, the reason I responded up-thread the way I did was infact the "reckless posting" remark he made. I told him that up until that point I had been content to not say anything at all in this thread and just let sleeping dogs lie but that comment compelled me to respond. The way I saw it, if my Metafilter FPP was a "reckless post", then surely this MeTa thread was a reckless post as well (given that, as I said, it would have been more appropriate to just flag it and move on). It seemed kind of hypocritical and that kind of annoyed me.

So anyway, I accepted his apology and then offered my own to the "your posts are shit" comment I made. I said that pretty much in the heat of the moment and while his two posts aren't really my cup of tea, they aren't shit.

The system works.
