Happy Anniversary to Me and MeFi October 20, 2008 9:05 AM   Subscribe

Today, October 20, is my eighth MetaFilter anniversary!

The most popular post that day (comment-wise) was about human population overtaxing the planet, by a user named mr.skullhead, who long ago vanished from our ranks.

Considering that in my adult lifetime, I have never lived in any one place for as long as eight years, had a single job that lasted for eight years, or owned a car for eight years, and even my own blog is only a couple of months older than my MeFi membership, this particular affiliation is one of the longest-lasting ones in my life.

So, a brief thanks to Number One for creating something of such long-lasting personal value to me and however many other folks who have stuck it out this long (or longer).

Not to be all Scrooge-y, but these sorts of posts are kind of a slippery slope, no? If it's deemed okay for you to do it, it's got to be okay for anyone to do it, and I don't think regular anniversary posts on MeTa are a good thing.

I was just thinking the other day, "Isn't briank's eighth Metafilter anniversary coming up?" So I looked up what the traditional gift for the 8th Metafilter anniversary is... turns out it's a tall, steaming mug of who the fuck cares.

My eighth anniversary is coming up in January in case you want to get your shopping out of the way now.

Wow, amro may have a point about this not being a wise precedent to set but do we really need all the ugliness? Congrats briank. I hope you enjoy your anniversary.

Won't be that long before we need an 'Assisted Living' subsite.

Congratulations, briank.

I thought the 8th MetaFilter anniversary was the Zippity-bop anniversary. No? Crap. Oh, well - more for me, I guess.

I don't see a problem if we wait to post anniversary threads until at least 5 years have passed.

Also, I feel like all the negative comments have offended my principle of choice.

I object really strongly to this assertion, and to whoever it was who made it. Everyone knows the traditional eighth MeFiversary gift is a Bucket of Cocks.

I don't know my exact MetaFilter birthday, but I'm pretty sure I've already passed my 9th; I was reading from day one-or-two, via a link from the kottke to "Matt's new weblog", and starting my first attempt at blogging in September '99, I wanted to be where all the "cool webloggers" hung out. Based on my user number, I signed up before Jessamyn (BEFORE JESSAMYN. Maybe she can help me narrow it down more.) But my first active participation was not until February, 2000. (Feb. 6th, first comment, Feb. 10th, first FPP) Yes, even The Wendell started out lurking.

Why am I telling you all this? I don't know, just be aware that I will tell you again every time someone celebrates his/her "MetaFilter Birthday" with a MetaTalk post. EVERY. TIME. With RickRollish regularity. You have been warned.

My god, this thread is like wandering around a party looking for the loo, and instead you accidentally open a door into a room full of ancient old cranks in rocking chairs, squinting and snapping at each other and poking each other with rubber-tipped canes while they squabble about whose colostomy bag is in more need of attention, and who's getting more massage from the night nurse.

Y'all should really put a sign outside.

There is a sign outside. It reads "Behind this door lies the greatest horror of all humankind: The Future. In a few short years this will be you."

But you had to go and open the door, didn't you? But while you're here you can rub my feet. My Burhanistanitus is acting up again. Don't be shy. Make sure you get in between the toes. Did I ever tell you the story about the perfect onion? I found it lying in the middle of the street. I was walking home from school in the snow barefoot thinking about how I didn't have any dinner last night and probably wouldn't have any tonight - at least until I found that Onion. So I tied it to my belt and took it home. Ma made a really nice soup zzzzzzzzzzzZZZZzzzzzzzzzz*snort* HOTTENTOTS. Err, what? Keep rubbing, sonny. Did I say stop?

I've lived my life reasonably certain that there exists nowhere on Earth a countryside more beautiful and generally agreeable to the senses than Southwest Michigan.

However, recently that long-held belief was called into question. Last month I attended a conference in the rolling, wooded hills of North Georgia. Normally, I loathe conferences, nonetheless I dutifully prepared my papers and attending power-point slides. When I arrived I discovered that it wasn't so much a conference at all, but really more of a "retreat". We presented, but we stayed in lovely cabins and had tons of free time to wander around, dip our toes in lovely waterfalls (made more accessible, sadly, by the current drought). There were cows wandering in unusually heavily wooded pastures and beautiful songbirds everywhere.

Also, I would occasionally be surprised by the unassuming presence of shiny, gem-like lizards resting peacefully on the rocks and trees. At one point, I was sitting quietly beside a fellow attendee when I looked over to discover two lizards chasing one another around a large tree trunk. "Look," I asked, "are those lizards playing on that tree?" "Yes," she replied, "like squirrels."

In numerology, 8 is the number of hard work and accomplishment. And as we learned from Multiplication Rock, laid on its side, it's the symbol for infinity.

So in that spirit of saluting hard work well done, CONGRATS, MeFi! ::hugs::

If my body was a car, this is the time I would be thinking about trading it in for a newer model. I've got bumps and dents and scratches in my finish and my paint job is getting a little dull ... but that's not the worst of it. My headlights are out of focus and it's especially hard to see things up close. My traction is not as graceful as it once was. I slip and slide and skid and bump into things even in the best of weather. My whitewalls are stained with scars and spots. It takes me hours to reach my maximum speed. My fuel rate burns inefficiently.

But here's the worst of it --

Almost every time I sneeze, cough or sputter ... either my radiator leaks or my exhaust backfires.

next year I'll be 29 again, mothefuckers.

Somewhat funny story: I remember shopping for a birthday cake for my mother right after we had moved into our new house, which would put me at four years old. I asked my dad how old mommy was going to be, and he said 29. I got very excited that this was my mommy's 29th birthday. Turns out this was all his idea of a joke, doing the math solidly identifies this as my mother's 30th birthday. Dude sure pulled one over on ME. I don't think the rest of the world was really fooled as easily.
