About 20 million turkeys.

Seriously though, what date? I'll be back there sometime mid-December.

I won't be back until after thanksgiving weekend, but then: hells yes!

Sounds good. When and where?
posted by Quietgal at 9:10 AM on November 20, 2008

I've been due to make it out to one of those. I think a lazy day-after-Thanksgiving get-together somewhere would be nice.

I'm in and my schedule is really flexible.

I'm right.

MeFi has a strange charm, top to bottom*.

I'm probably in, but I might be out. If I'm in I'll go out, but if I'm out I'll stay in.

I would attend. My schedule is flexible.

I'm interested but undirected. In general, but also for purposes of this thread.

I will go just about anywhere when bribed with pumpkin pie. Home made, store bought, whatever as long as it's not actually yam or squash pie or some other non-pumpkin custard abomination.

If the tides are right and the pies are ready and willing I may be so gracious as to humbly display the fascinating and astounding gift which allows me to completely vanish one or more whole pumpkin pies, even after a full dinner.

I misread that as "varnish". Why would anyone varnish a pumpkin pie? Oh.

My position is up in the air.
posted by tangerine at 8:21 PM on November 20, 2008

You know loquacious, the best pumpkin pie is actually made with kabocha squash, and I bet if no one told you what it was made of you'd never guess!

(I'm in maybe, depending on dates and childcare.)

I'm thinking about coming, but I have thanksgiving, in-law thanksgiving, and family tradition post t-day leftover picnic, so I won't be able to lift my distended belly off of the couch until first week of December.

Canned 'pumpkin' filling is usually at least partially squash.

Maybe the meetup should be at Mission Pie?

Waitwaitwaitwait...
There's punkin pie involved now?
I will definitely be available.

I'm a gonna varnish it with mah belly!

Ok. Heck, I suppose I'd try a pie made with spaghetti squash.

Still no proposals for time and place? OK, here's mine: instead of just meeting up for finger food and beer, let's work off some of the Thanksgiving calories doing something on Saturday afternoon, then segue into the food & beer.

Possible activities:
• birdwatching at Crissy Field
• a trip to the new Academy of Sciences or the Asian Art Museum (may be very crowded, though)
• a photography-oriented walk somewhere in the city (Telegraph Hill and the Marchant Gardens are a favorite of mine)
• walking across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito and taking the ferry home (we could have the beer in Sausalito)
• strolling through Strybing Arboretum in Golden Gate Park
• a visit to the historic ships at Maritime Park: the SS Jeremiah O'Brian, the Balclutha, etc

Lame? Propose something better! I'd love to discover new and wonderful things in the Bay Area - just make it BART-friendly, please.

I'd like some exploratory walking as well. I'm pretty new to the West coast, so no brilliant ideas though.
posted by foodmapper at 10:13 AM on November 24, 2008

Pooh on quietgal's suggestion, if only because I'll be hiding in LA through Sunday. How about the first weekend in December?
posted by paultopia at 6:19 PM on November 24, 2008

First weekend of December? But that's when Cupcake Camp is!

Hmmm.

Okay so we'll meet up at cupcake camp, eat delicious cupcakes, then afterwards head somewhere to drink and maybe eat some actual food.
posted by aubilenon at 12:19 PM on November 25, 2008

Why not both? I think I'd be up for some walking around on Saturday, especially if I could bring my dog.
posted by tangerine at 5:03 PM on November 26, 2008

Paultopia asked me to take over the meetup planning while he hides out in LA with family for the next few days, so I say we punt on this Saturday (tomorrow). There's not enough time left to get something together, so let's try for next weekend (Dec 6 or 7).

I still like the idea of walking around and exploring stuff before the beer and food, so I refer you to my list above for possibilities. There's also Cupcake Camp, proposed by aubilenon.

Who wants Saturday, Dec 6 and who wants Sunday the 7th? (Hey, that's Pearl Harbor Day - the SS Jeremiah O'Brian or the USS Pampanito would be appropriate.)

Post your votes here, along with what you'd like to do, if anything, beyond beer.

Well I'm going to cupcake camp. If you guys don't want cupcakes (???) then I would like to catch up with you afterwards.

CUPCAKE CAMP!
posted by zsazsa at 2:35 PM on December 2, 2008

Woo hoo! Paultopia and I have conferred, and Cupcake Camp, here we come! Let's meet up for some open-source cupcakes and then figure out where to go afterwards for beer. I'll probably get there around 2 - 2:30 because I'm unfashionably punctual, but it looks like we have all afternoon to straggle in.

Aubilenon, can we RSVP on the Cupcake Camp website as a group or do we have to sign in individually? If we can do a group RSVP could you please sign us up? If not, please let us know here in this thread that it's every camper for themselves and you snooze, you lose.

Also, would it be really lame if I showed up without any cupcakes to share? I'm not much of a baker, and the thought of having to register my cupcakes is just too intimidating. You guys are way out of my league.
posted by Quietgal at 10:22 AM on December 4, 2008

AFAIK you don't have to do anything RSVP-wise unless you bring cupcakes (which if you do, you need to tell them, but it's totally optional).

Last cupcake camp there were plenty of non-losing snoozers. Though there were enough people later on in the day that the rounds of cupcakes didn't last that long.

The cupcake registration is so that they can schedule staged cupcake deployment. Every 15 minutes they put out another 1/24th of their cupcakes or whatever. They encourage people to do any one or more of the following:

* Bring cupcakes you made
* Bring cupcakes you bought
* Eat cupcakes other people brought

(But yeah, if you are bringing something, they want to know what and how much. "registration" sounds more formal than the process really is, though)
posted by aubilenon at 11:06 AM on December 4, 2008

The way I read it you have to RSVP if you are coming.
posted by BrotherCaine at 4:21 PM on December 4, 2008

Oh yeah, it does encourage that. So I guess if you're planning on coming, say so on upcoming. I think the reason they want you to do that though is so for viral / social networking reasons rather than for "real" reasons (the organizer is crazy about that stuff).

I don't know if I'll be able to make it to anything on the 6th, and I might have to recover and sleep on the 7th. I totally forgot I was booked to do tech support for this:

This Saturday my art space is hosting the SF portion of le Placard Global Headphone Festival. Starts at 4PM PST, goes until about 4 AM. Bring headphones and your 1/4" adapter.

See the SF lineup here.

Msg or email me for directions if you need them. More info about our local portion of the concert here.

I just RSVP'd on Upcoming and there are over 400 people registered. Are most of them probably going to flake, or is this going to be a gigantic event and how are we supposed to find the MeFi contingent?

Also, as an überlame non-bringer-of-cupcakes I feel kinda guilty about possibly overloading the life support systems. Will there be enough cupcakes for 400 people???
posted by Quietgal at 1:09 PM on December 5, 2008

Last time there were about 500 cupcakes. Last time people weren't allowed to bring > 12 cupcakes, but this time there are.

It was a kind of sizable event last time, so I guess some kind of meeting plan might be worthwhile. I don't really know what the place we're meeting in is like, but I'll be there the whole time. I'll be wearing a top hat.
posted by aubilenon at 4:57 PM on December 5, 2008

Haha! I totally thought both cupcake camp and the meetup were today! But they're not!

Anyway I've seen the cupcake lineup and is ridiculous. There will be nearly 2000 cupcakes there. Assuming an equal ratio of bakers to eaters as last time I think there will be too many cupcakes, since everyone's bringing nearly twice as many.

Mine are going to be up first at 2:00, so if you want some mefite-made deliciousness, show up early!
posted by aubilenon at 10:55 AM on December 6, 2008

I'll be there at two with my Polaroid.

So is there still a plan for the 7th, or has this puppy sailed?
posted by alexei at 1:17 AM on December 7, 2008

Some of us are meeting at Cupcake camp to eat delicious cupcakes! I don't know who, but show up and satisfy your cravings for cupcakes and mefites.

Actually, I don't think I will be there. Too much stuff to do at home. Too bad it wasn't yesterday!
posted by zsazsa at 11:11 AM on December 7, 2008

Oh dear. I hurt my knees doing some work on the front stairs so I will have to pass on Cupcake Camp. Please post many pictures of cupcakes for vicarious enjoyment.
posted by Quietgal at 11:21 AM on December 7, 2008

Oh no! Poor quietgal... get better soon.

I should be there (unless schedule blows up at the last minute) -- for identification purposes, I look like this, only usually less mean, and will be wearing a beaten up black leather jacket.
posted by paultopia at 12:39 PM on December 7, 2008

Well heck, I didn't know about any of this until just now. Hope the cupcakes were delicious!
