Secret Quonsar, year 2? November 20, 2008 9:19 AM   Subscribe

Last year's Secret Quonsar was lots of fun, and I think we should do it again.

The Elfster group is still in existence.

Reading that thread last year was like being back in High School. Everyone else was doing fun stuff, and I was just sitting invisibly in the corner, unable to participate and only able to imagine what I'd do if I could.

Unlike High School, when I give five bucks to Metafilter's ringleader, I get to join the cool kids.

That is to say, I'm in.

So it's a way to hike the shipping up even higher than normal?

posted by DU at 10:11 AM on November 20, 2008

Nice, the preview lied to me about what it was about to post. I'll do this the non-snarky way for clarity and in penance: How does it work? The link indicates people post what they want and it gets sent to them. Neat, but it seems like that's not much different than just buying it yourself and paying less shipping. Or is it open to send something other than the wished-for item?

I'm in! I'm in the u-SOFA but I'm happy to ship wherever your pants desire.
posted by grapefruitmoon at 10:14 AM on November 20, 2008

DU, you can send anything you want to the person. There is space on Elfster for you to add your wishlists so people can see what sorts of things you like. While my wishlists are on my Elfster profile, last year I received a beautiful handmade stuffed kitty that I adore.

Elfster takes care of randomly matching people up. The question is, should we start a new group for this year, in case people from last year don't see this thread? We don't want a bunch of people who either don't want to do it again, or are uninformed, to be matched up with those who are participating this year.

I'm in - it was fun last year! I still have a ton of weird little LCD keychains from Hong Kong floating around! - but my address has changed, will Elfster let me change it? My guess is we'll need a whole new Elfster group.
posted by mygothlaundry at 10:28 AM on November 20, 2008

Sure, why not? If a new group gets set up I'll put up a wishlist.

Be sure to ship your gift to me inside of a Diamond DA40XLS aircraft, with a 180hp Lycoming engine, constant speed prop, glass cockpit, and sheepskin seat covers. The address is 1 Cartalk Plaza available on request.

If you're mailing to me, I'm happy with anything that can be stuck in a regular envelope with regular postage so you don't get shafted by overseas postage. Seriously. Origami crane? Awesome. I'm easily pleased, me.

Caduceus: You go into your profile and there's a spot to add it.

Librarina: After the registration closes, the site will draw names and email you the person it has chosen at random for you. You'll go to their profile to get their address, and look at their wishlist if they've provided one. You can buy your gift online and ship it direct, or buy one in person (or make something) and mail it out yourself. :)

Well, my personal opinion is that the only reason to get a gift for or from a random person on the internet is that it is something so random you would never have bought it. The wishlist kind of defeats that point.

A little update on having your real name hidden in your profile, and making sure your Mefi name is visible:

What we found to work last year (and how I have my profile set up) is under Update Your Profile, put your Mefi name in the First Name field, and leave the last name field blank. Then, put your real name in the Address 1 blank, and then your address in the Address 2 blank. That way only the person who chooses you can see your real name, if you didn't use it as your username.

When I signed into Elfster it told me there were unsent invitations. I don't know how that works... I assumed there was some thing to where, if people weren't using the sign up link, they could request to be invited to the group. I just clicked the "send invitations" link it gave me and it sent them - I think there were only 2 or 3. Sorry about the confusion!

Eekacat, I see you signed up in the list so you can disregard that.

So, I´ve never done a secret santa exchange before, and I´m making my secret plans to send a little box of awesomeness out to my quonsar -- but do I put a note in that says ¨from yohko¨, keep it secret, hide my identity in a puzzle to be solved, what?
posted by yohko at 11:48 AM on December 2, 2008

in all the ones i've done, you include a note saying who you are.
posted by misanthropicsarah at 12:03 PM on December 2, 2008

A little update on having your real name hidden in your profile, and making sure your Mefi name is visible:

What we found to work last year (and how I have my profile set up) is under Update Your Profile, put your Mefi name in the First Name field, and leave the last name field blank. Then, put your real name in the Address 1 blank, and then your street address in the Address 2 blank. That way only the person who chooses you can see your real name, if you didn't use it as your username.

Also, I have privacy enabled so that only the person who draws you can see your address. If you go to your draw and don't see their address, try making sure you're logged in to Elfster. I also recommend everyone go to their profile and make sure your address is posted, if we think that they're disappearing? I don't recall that happening last year. And you can use the "ask so-and-so a question" to ask an anonymous question, including for an address.

I have a person who missed the fact that the sign-up date was moved to the 1st and would like to be included. I can't add this person to Elfster since names have already been drawn. If you were also accidentally left out and would like to do an exchange with this person, please Mefi Mail or email me. First come, first served.

and the actual gifts are bitchin'! is that photo your own artwork? i like that the best. i also love the mixtape. and thanks for the wonderful things from the benefit center. you did put thought into the gift, i can tell.

ok enough gushing.

i sent my secret quonsar gift out today (had to wait on payday). i am chagrined that the postman told me my giftee likely won't get it until well after christmas, and then made a snide remark about the country they live in (i have an international giftee). grrr.

My secret Quonsar surprised me hugely by sending me a book I've been really wanting to read but couldn't get for myself. Thank you, thank you, thank you - I now have something to read for February that doesn't have to go back to the library!

Boo:
The post office rejected the box for my secret Quonsar because it was wrapped in festively stamped paper, so it's right at this moment being re-sent but this time as a mostly-nude "post-consumer" box. I hope the contents make up for this gross miscarriage of postal craft in some small way.

I'm getting bummed reading about the awesome quonsar skillz of my fellow mifites. I hope my giftee liked her cake-flavored lipgloss. My co-worker wanted them desperately.

This is so much fun reading about what meFites got from their SQ; I hope everyone reports in so we can share in the glee. I'm looking forward to a bulletin on my gift being received as well as anything the mailman might drop off for me. And if that did happen to be a package with cake-flavored lipgloss, I would be thrilled. Mmmmmm cake.

Just found out there is a separate thread for the thank yous, so I'll be hanging out over there.

@Misha

You have no idea the power of the package! What an awesome treat -- I documented a bit of this in the package coming your way... but, the exciting news is this:

The panic button, worn to a friend's Christmas party, scored me a date. Yeah, I let him use my panic button.

Thank you so much! Merry Quonsar!

Thank you Indigo Rain for making it all happen!

Ok, so I missed the postman last week, and then had to leave town by the time I found the notice to go to the post office. I got back early this morning, sunday, so I won't be able to see it until tomorrow! Provided the dear husband hasn't lost my ticket to get it. I'm sooo excited!

I just got back from the post office with this lovely book.

I must have let on at some point how much I enjoy etymology, but I don't remember! So kudos on your research, secret quonsar!

And thanks to IndigoRain as well. This was a unique experience!

I'm just checking in to let my secret quonsar know I never received a gift; if you are anything like me, you ordered something online (in my case for a dear friend), they took your money and thanked you, and told you the order was both complete and fulfilled. Apparently "fulfilled" means "back-ordered with an estimated ship date of MARCH 15 (123 days from order!)" to some retailers. I only know this because I called them when my friend told me she never got a gift from me this year (Glad I mentioned it in my thank you note to her!).

I'm in the never-received-gift-club too. We should do Quonsar in July, just for us rejects.

Whoo hoo! The postman brought me quonsar love today! I got a lovely cat container the perfect size for my collection of stitch holders and a gorgeous letterpress-printed card. Yay! Thank you.

I'm in the "oh dear, I hope my recipient received it!" club. I don't want him (OR HER!) to think they're in the No Love Club when they're just in the Slow Mail Club.
