Bug report: I updated my profile, and it reset my status to Single.

I'm on Windows Server 2008(64-bit edition), running Firefox 3.0.5. I tried multiple times to set it to Taken. I logged out, killed all cookies, restarted the browser, logged back in, and tried again. Still stays as Single.

Metafilter knows something you don't.

Thanks for letting us know, it should be working now.

Obviously your wife/girlfriend is more honest with Metafilter than she is with you (which probably helps explain why she decided to break off in the first place). This is just Mefi's way of breaking the news to you gently.

Also: she gets half your favorites now.

See what all the DTMFA over on Ask did to the core of MeFi?

OMG, pb can now patch up your relationships!

You can't fix a festering cancerous amputation with a band-aid! It's like when you really really hate somebody, but then you go ahead and have a kid together anyway.

He wouldn't do it with ColdFusion, at least.

Metafilter has also packed up your office and returned your ID badge to security.

That's not a bug, that's a feature.

It thinks it means Dump The MetaFilter Already. How could it tell the difference, it's just a dumb machine! Of course it began to hate, hate us all!

Patch? *sigh* Get with the program, guys. He's obviously going to roll back to a previous version. You ... did ... have that relationship in Git, right?

It's not you, it's MeFi.*

*Pun invalid anywhere it's egregiously mispronounced as Meffy.
Seriously, fuck is up with you mispronouncers?

Is it better to make a new Metatalk post for a different bug? Or, since there's likely to be a few problems in the wake of the attack, is it better to make this the "bugs" thread?

Because I haven't been able to read AskMe comments since the site came back online when using FireFox (3.0.5), although I can with Safari (3.1.2).

(am using a Mac, OSX 10.4.11, if it helps).

The contact form or MeFi Mailing an admin works pretty well for bug reports. You probably don't need to create a new MetaTalk thread unless it's something you think needs to be brought to everyone's attention.

What happens when you try to read AskMe comments, kisch? Do you get an error message or do you see a blank page?

I get a green screen with all the headers, but no question and no comments. It just hangs.

I'm guessing it's a cookie issue for that specific browser. Try clearing all metafilter.com cookies in Firefox, restarting, and logging into the site again. We had some problems with the font family preference cookie right after we brought the site up, and I think that could be contributing here.

pb, just to piggyback another bug report into this thread...The Blue is dropping comments. I hit post comment and the page reloaded like normal, except my comment wasn't there. I tried again, same problem. Then I tried to 'preview'. Then metafilter.com went down. So maybe this was a function of the site about to crash, or something else.

Thank you so much for everything you do around here. You are very much appreciated.

Ok, so now they are showing up. I'm assuming the comments went wonky right before the site crashed.
posted by schyler523 at 11:45 AM on January 27, 2009

Yep, if the server is crashing just as you're posting a comment it's possible it could time out before hitting the db. Sounds like that's what happened, sorry about the trouble.

...wait, how do you say it? Mee-fie, like me fi fo fum?
posted by Dormant Gorilla at 12:32 PM on January 27, 2009

My completely unscientific sampling of MeFites indicates that most people pronounce MeFi so it rhymes with "fee fie." This is clearly influenced by HiFi. Some MeFites pronounce MeFi so it rhymes with "Steffi" and I've run across "meh fih" a few times. As far as I've been able to find out everyone says "mee fight" for MeFite.

A female Mefite in New England is known as a "muffy".

I'd always pronounced it "MEH-fight" in my head.

But then I also pronounce "memes" as "may-mays".

My sister pronounces "Phoebe" as "fobe". Also, it's impossible to say "misled" properly if you're reading it.

I always thought it was meh-fee, meh-fite, meh-tah. And then askme is, appropriately, the odd one out.
posted by Dormant Gorilla at 4:31 PM on January 27, 2009

Ah yeah, I pronounce MeTa as if it were the word "meta."
