NYC meet-up. Brooklyn represent.

It's been over a month, folks. Atlantic Ave is near nearly all the subway lines, so I don't want to hear any grousing from non-Brooklyners. Brooklyn Tavern, anyone? Who's game this month and when?

Yay. I'm arriving in NY on Thursday and staying until 1st March. Love to catch up with jonmc and some of the gang after all the fun we had last time (2004).

I'm staying in Park Slope but am happy to mooch anywhere at a time that doesn't clash with any of the Knicks home games. How about Sunday from midday somewhere they'll show the Knicks @ Raptors ;-)

Yes, there is a theme to my trip and judging on recent performances, it could be frustration...

Oh, man. I was going to make an Motherless Brooklyn joke, but then I read the title.

And thus, you force me to say, You took a walk on a Sunday afternoon and came to a nice neighborhood, very refined. You saw a small one of these trees through the iron gate leading to someone's yard, and you knew that soon that section of Brooklyn would get to be a tenement district. The tree knew. It came there first. Afterwards, poor foreigners seeped in and the quiet old brownstone houses were hacked up into flats, feather beds were pushed out the window sills to air and the Tree of Heaven flourished. That was the kind of tree it was. It liked poor people.

This meet-up is a convocation for all residents and passersby of New York City© to meet up in the subsidiary neighborhood of Brooklyn. I just triumphantly quit my job, so my spare time is erratic but more freed up. Throw out some dates. I'll go first: next Sunday works for me.

posted by zoomorphic at 8:24 AM on February 19, 2009

Where the dude from Twilight is handing out an award?

Actually, the dude from TWILIGHT is in my cool book because he has made statements of open and blatant contempt for the author of the books in interviews. It's really, really obvious that he and his agent hadn't heard of the books when he took the movie job and they only knew that "oh, it's some fantasy book series that's really popular, you could end up being the next HARRY POTTER franchise, go for it" and so he signed the contract, and only then did he finally read the books and thought "holy fuck, what have I gotten into?" It almost looks like he's deliberately trying to sabotage his involvement just so he can get the hell out.

he's also come up with a really creative way for dealing with stalky fangirls -- there was one girl who was following him around, and so he finally just invited her to dinner and then proceeded to be as boring as humanly possible, and she ended up leaving early and hasn't tried anything since.

Think of his current movie what you will, but the guy himself is in my cool book.

EC, I actually find Rob Pattinson ridiculously hot and charming, but does he really belong at (ostensibly) the most esteemed cinematic awards ceremony of the year? Though I guess everyone behind the Oscars realized they lost their integrity after nominating the sub-par performances of both Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt just to get them on the red carpet together and boost ratings. I'm pretty sure most of the Academy didn't even watch the movies to begin with.

Wow, I am way too upset that Rachel Getting Married didn't get a nod for Best Picture. Deep breaths.
posted by zoomorphic at 3:40 PM on February 19, 2009

Oh, handing out awards is rarely tied to how well your actual career is going, so I've noticed. It's more like "let's get flashy people to hand out the awards because that'll make Sue Ellen in Nelliesville tune in and watch even though she only gets to see Robin Pattinson or whoever he is hand someone a statue."

They've had CARTOONS hand out awards. Award presentation isn't as estimable an honor as you'd think.
