Pretty much any tacqueria in the Mission. We don't do Peruvian coke in SF - it's all about the Mexican coke! posted by rtha at 10:49 AM on March 22, 2009

Christ, I love the fonts in both the original and the new one. It looks as if the original hand-drawn font isn't available. (Compare the N and the A in the original and Matt's.)
Matt, what font did you use? It's close to Gill (and hey, I wouldn't kick Gill out of bed for eating crackers, either). Gotham? P22 Underground? posted by maudlin at 1:11 PM on March 22, 2009

OK, the articles indicate that the "Keep Calm and Carry On" message was intended for use after a Nazi invasion of the British Isles.
Carry on? What the what? Nazis have overrun London, and I'm supposed to show up for my job as a bus driver in Bristol? Who would I be driving where? Was everyone in the UK high? You all saw what happened to France. And this time, the losing country would be an island.
How about, "Load Up and Man the Barricades?"
At least in the movie Children of Men, one of the propaganda bits is "Only Britain Soldiers On." posted by Cool Papa Bell at 8:42 PM on March 22, 2009
I was under the impression that the poster was designed shortly after outbreak of war, during the so-called 'phony war' before any Nazi invasion was envisioned. posted by boubelium at 8:54 PM on March 22, 2009
That sign was totally awesome. Adding ", bitches" was also awesome.

I'll be damned. I had always thought Keep Calm and Carry On posters were actually put up during the Blitz - I didn't know about then Nazi invasion failsafe.
I was in the government's offices in Whitehall a few months ago and I saw one up in a cubicle.

You should read about the WWII experience of the Channel Islands, the only part of the UK to actually be overrun by the Nazis.
Not to deny that lots of British citizens would have quite happily gone along with a Nazi invasion, which they surely would (the former King Edward VIII foremost among them, you'd suspect), but I feel I must be pedantic: the Channel Islands aren't actually a part of the UK.
As far as the "Keep Calm and Carry On" posters go, I'd imagine the thinking behind them was that a Nazi invasion would not overrun the country immediately, but instead that it could be contained for some time close to the South coast. As such, it would be vital that the British army's natural advantage - the country's industrial and agricultural infrastructure feeding into overland supply chains to the front line, while the Nazi's supplies would have to be shipped across the Channel - wasn't disrupted by the fact that everybody behind the front line had run away to Ireland or something. posted by flashboy at 7:03 AM on March 23, 2009

Dammit! Tricksy Brits and their tricksy definitions! While editing a business guide, I once spent a considerable amount of time trying to pin down exactly what the relationship of Northern Ireland was to the rest of the UK: was it a province? a territory? what? I finally got hold of an official at, if I recall correctly, the consulate in NYC, who after some research, consultation, and muttering, told me "The relationship of Northern Ireland to the UK is undefined." Tricksy, tricksy UKians! posted by languagehat at 7:35 AM on March 23, 2009 [1 favorite]
As for co-operating with the Nazis, well, a lot of people in the UK, the US and all across Allied countries had pretty dodgy politics and may well have collaborated has the Axis powers got that far. Bigotry, racism and evil were hardly confined to the Nazis alone.
but instead that it could be contained for some time close to the South coast.
I guess that makes sense, then, if the thinking is that the Nazis would only be able to get a few miles inland and then stay put for a period of time before they really tried to bust out. posted by Cool Papa Bell at 10:08 AM on March 23, 2009
