Berlin meet-up?

Since the grill-boat looks prohibitively expensive, I was thinking of grilling here on my terrace sometime in the next few weeks...whenever we have a really sunny, warm week-end. Let me know if ya'll are interested and if you can find a long-term weather forecast. If you don't know where I live I will tell you in a memail.

Not this week-end though.

I'm down! I am sad to miss out on the Grill-boot though, which apparently not only has VIP-feeling, but also looks like it would be quite the experience to be sitting on during an unexpected squall with a grill full of meat products. I would have liked to be at the pitch meeting for Grill-boot ("Grill-boot is a small round plastic boat covered with advertisements for Grill-boot, with an open food grill in the center of it. The passengers are 6 inches away from the grill. Overhead there is a fabric umbrella. They are experiencing VIP-feeling!").

I am not in Berlin, but that Grill-Boot is the best thing I've ever seen.

Maybe the London MeFites should join up and come over for grilling on the terrace...

My favorite part is how you pay an extra 45 Euros for the grill. Minus the grill, it's a big innertube with a shitty motor stuck onto it. That's 55 an hour?

No, actually, you're right -- the best part is the VIP feeling. VIP compared to what? A normal inner-tube? I'd imagine people grill on yachts all the time, though I've never seen it with my own eyes.

Also, if I did splurge on this sort of thing for a special occasion, you can bet we'd be drinking, and then people would ge getting up and walking around and someone would fall out, and in climbing back in they'd tip the whole thing over...and then you wouldn't be able to climb back in because there'd be hot coals strewn all over the boat...so basically you can only book the thing if you can afford to buy it and sink it. That means that if you see a grill-boat, you know it's never been used.

Creasy, nice work. Yes. Not this weekend. But another.

They are experiencing VIP-feeling!

This is a spot-on imitation of what happens when you put a German sentence into Google Translate.

you should have done this last weekend when people like myself were in town for the ADC gala. too bad.

When it happens, drop me a mail - I'll swing over from Warsaw. :)

I'm in Munich - given a little bit of notice, I could combine a trip to Berlin for some research and touristing with a meetup.

Wow, international participation. Sure. I can't seem to find a long-range forecast that doesn't just throw all kinds of nasty ads at me and generally fuck with me -- does anyone know what the weather'll be like on the Saturday the 16th, for example?

There's unfortunately no such thing yet as an accurate-enough-to-make-plans-by weather forecast for 12 days out. If there is a likelihood of out-of-towners, I would say pick a date and time now so they can still get reasonable transportation tickets, and let's make a fallback plan in the event that the weather doesn't cooperate.

I second your suggestion of the 16th. We could go bowling or pubbing or attempt to arrange a visit to the Buchstabenmuseum if it's cloudy, but it'll probably be nice.

I was hoping for general trends like: this week sucks but next will won't. But yeah, I guess you're right, Berlin weather can turn on a dime. Allright, the 16th then?

next week won't

It just turned on a dime. Today sucks, but the 16th won't.

I for one am also happy to contribute meat products or alcohol, in addition to my company.

I'm in portugal from the 11th to the 28th of may, so I won't be able to make it... But we don't have to limit our pubbing and grilling to once a year, so why don't we have another litttle meetup in june or something?

I'm not sure I can make it, houseguests. Are we/Berlin doing anything for the 10th anniversary?

How about we make a deal? I will be grilling up here on the 16th of next week, weather permitting, pending approval of my girlfriend who is currently at work, and then someone else can organize a more riotous meet-up for the 10th anniversary? Perhaps at a mefite-owned bar? Or perhaps at the Mama Bar in the Hobrecht Str., which is generally not too full? Or perhaps in Görlitzer Park and our bar tab will just consist of receipts from that weird Multi-Kulti store where everyone buys beer and rolling papers?

"and then someone else can organize a more riotous meet-up for the 10th anniversary? Perhaps at a mefite-owned bar? "

Why not? I'll add Berlin to the 10th page... 17th or 18th, Friday or Saturday?

Shit, I just realized the 10th anniversary is in July, not June. I'm flying back to Germany from America on July 18th.

However...if the weather is good, you are all hereby invited to eat some hamburgers at my place the Saturday after next. It will be a mini-meetup. Feel free to bring wives, husbands, children, pets, house-guests, etc.

I'd come to a Berlin meet when I'm back later this summer.
July sometime though.
I'll check back.

Here's the Berlin thread anyway.

So creasy boy, is this plan still pending approval or did it get stamped?
posted by Your Time Machine Sucks at 4:12 AM on May 12, 2009

Oh yeah, did I not say it got stamped? This Saturday at my place. Around 5 maybe? Or should we start earlier? The weather's now saying it'll be 22 during the day, some late showers. It won't be a pure meetup, I have a friend coming over who's a non-Mefite and just really likes barbecue.
posted by creasy boy at 10:49 PM on May 12, 2009

That's fine, we can induct him.
posted by Your Time Machine Sucks at 6:09 AM on May 14, 2009

Allright, I'm postponing my barbecue due to rain...to Sunday at 4. On Sunday it'll be really nice and I'll make whiskey sours and everything. Hope I'm not inconveniencing anyone.

I put some photos up on my flickr thing here. The first 3 are pertinent. The rest are just photos of Marta's family.
