Trying to track down a link to an online short sci-fi nove June 20, 2009 4:58 PM   Subscribe

Trying to track down a link to an online short sci-fi novel that I saw mentioned/linked here ... was called "?????-01" or something like that ...

Somewhere on Metafilter I found a link to a short sci-fi novel that had been published online. It was called "something-something-01" and it was about some virtual people stuck inside an experimental computer oribiting jupiter. Except at the start of the novel you don't know thats whats going on (in that typical sci-fi way) and it starts with fantasy type stuff in a tribal environment with telepathic animals etc.

Can anyone find it? I had a good search round but couldn't ....

Er, spoiler warning?

Er, it's a post about a book, an album, a movie or a play. Expect spoilers.

Certainly - for ID questions like this, you need to include spoilers. But the way this particular question was phrased, the end is pretty much given away before you have much of a chance to tell whether the story rings any bells. I guess I would have preferred a description that began with the beginning of the novel, rather than the "reveal." Ah well.

You should post this on Ask, unless you don't like your question been asnwered in a few minutes.

Sorry about the lack of spoiler warning.

What I describe is not the ending of the book though, I just describe what happens in the first two chapters (because thats all I have read). So I'm not giving the ending away, I'm just setting the scene. Its roughly equivalent to what you would get if you read the back of the book (were the book to have a back).

On a more internet-ology level, I think what stopped me adding the word spoiler, was that putting a spoiler warning about a book I don't know the title of would (in theory) stop anyone from reading the thread because no-one would know what was about to get spoiled. A spoiler warning without a book title would seem to say "any book you've not read yet might get spoiled if you read this" : ) Though I guess in practice that isn't true, thats how it seemed when I wrote the thread.

That said, if I could edit the word 'spoiler' in I would, but I can't now, sorry.

I posted it in MetaTalk because I've seen several other threads here where people were trying to find a link they had seen and then lost.

Generally, if it's a question about "where was this thing on metafilter", this is the right place to ask it, not askme. memebake is fine.

memebake is fine.
They might have escaped here on a technicality, but I'm sure we can pin something on them. Grab the unsolved cases files and get framing.

Just trying to be helpful, as from what I've seen AskMe is scary good in name-that-X questions. Thanks for clarifying.
