FWIW, we have "add photos" links on each city's home page of the ten site, but there's no way to spot new ones, so one free-for-all list here would be good (just remember to add links to the city meetup you attended).

As much as I love me some Flickr, this is where Flickr falls short - quick, easy viewing of large numbers of photos. Check out CoolIris as an amazing plug-in that solves this problem.

Sacramento, held in Davis, fell through. I mean, I went, but the organizer and other attendees didn't make it.

I have pictures from the Columbus, OH meet-up I'm sitting on because A) they came out terribly and B) someone else had to bring a camera, right? and C) I have four thousand other photos from this weekend to upload, between the Alice in Wonderland party on Friday and the sticky sweaty underground electronica show after the meetup. Columbus kiddies, does anyone actually want to see these underexposed and red-eye-ridden shots I managed to get while running for my bus?

I did manage to document what I looked like after doing my damned best to bogart as much of the $100 bar tab as I could.

Nested 'a href' does my head in.
posted by tellurian at 4:04 AM on July 23, 2009

The mystery is that your original fucked-up link is just, as you note, blank in the source; your browser interprets that as a relative link (since it doesn't start with http:// or such and so is not an absolute link) to nowhere in particular (since there's no content to the link that would indicate a local directory-and-filename to fetch), which translates to a link to exactly the page you're already on.

Which means if you view it from a fresh load of this thread, it looks like it's linking to this thread. If you view it from a comment anchor in this thread, it links there. From recent activity? It links to recent activity. Etc.

But unless you intentionally view it from a few different places and make the connection, it can seem like a magical ever-changin' mystery link if you haven't run into it before.
posted by cortex (staff) at 7:33 AM on July 23, 2009

Metafilter: a magical ever-changin' mystery link
posted by ocherdraco at 9:31 AM on July 23, 2009

After several readings I still can't wrap my head around your explanation, so I'm going to grasp at your last sentence.
How do I intentionally view it from a few different places and make the connection, so that it doesn't seem like a magical ever-changin' mystery link that I haven't run into before?
N.B. The link (for me) currently points to your comment. That would be consistent, yes?
posted by tellurian at 9:34 AM on July 23, 2009

That was for cortex if it's not clear, handee and ocherdraco weren't on the horizon.
handee - it was a mistake on my part and so didn't expect anything.
posted by tellurian at 9:39 AM on July 23, 2009

That would be consistent, yeah, if you clicked into the thread by clicking on my comment from recent activity, because that made the url up in your browser's address bar be the address for my comment:

http://metatalk.metafilter.com/17989/We-have-cameras#666523

Because your link was effectively <a href="">, the browser said "oh shit, the href is blank, so I should just treat this as saying <a href="[whatever address i'm already at]">, and, blammo, my comment is the link it points to.

How you intentionally view it from different places is tricky; you can't view the comment from recent activity anymore, since you've already commented again in this thread and so that broken comment is out of the RA's view of the thread for you. Boh!

But you can click on other people's comment timestamps in here, and each time the link displayed by your broken comment should reflect that new with-#xxxxxx-anchor-text url.

Or you could change the url stub on the thread by replacing "We-have-cameras" with like something else and the blank link will show that.

In essence, the "blank links link to the current page" thing is a side effect of the rules browsers use for deciding how to follow a relative url. It's only especially weird when there's multiple places you can view a comment from, which is the case for metafilter in part because of Recent Activity (which is usually how these WTF moments come up).
posted by cortex (staff) at 9:42 AM on July 23, 2009
