Philly MeFi 10.1 meetup? July 22, 2009 9:45 AM Subscribe
Once was not enough. Philly makeup meetup in honor of [insert Philly Mefite of your choosing], same location unless greekphilosophy would rather not, different time?
I'm proposing a meetup on Saturday, 22 August at 7:00 or 8:00, both because not everyone could make it last week and well, hey, delicious food and drink. Any takers? I'm bringing something.
Hat tip to geckoinpdx.

It bears mentioning that sometime before then piratebowling is going to have a craft night, and that I'm also planning a nerdy board game night that Mefites will most certainly be invited to.

I know I mentioned this to some of you at the tenth party, but there's also a not-really-a-mefi-meetup-but-love-to-have-y'all-over-all-the-same party (aka our annual barbeque) at my house on August 15th. There will be music, homebrewed beer (courtesy of our friends who actually make really, really good beer), live music, and lots of tasty of foodstuffs, including a metric ton* of authentic southern smoked pork.
We usually have about 50 folks at this shindig, and it's fairly kid-friendly, for those of you who have spawned. MeMail me for details if you're interested.
* "metric ton" may be a slight exaggeration. But there will be lots of pork, I promise you that.

We could combine some of these meetuplets. For instance, you boardgamer people could play games and those of us less inclined to play could stand around making pithy comments.
(Vouching for the REALLY REALLY GOODNESS of shiu mai baby's friends' beer. Ooh, say hi for me and also if we had a meetup one week after your pig, you could bring me some. Pig and beer, that is.)

I am definitely down for board games night (I haven't forgotten that you have Lord of the Rings Risk, greekphilosophy...), especially if it includes running pithy commentary by desuetude. I'm also in for a craft night, as long as our definition of "crafts" is broad enough to include rudimentary line drawings of unicorns on trampolines.

Shameless plug: My best friend plays upright bass in a philly band called Hoots and Hellmouth. They sang the 7th inning stretch at a phillies game recently and have an amazing new album out. Check them out if you ever get the chance. When in Philly, they almost always play at Johnny Brendas. Great guys and really involved and committed to agricultural sustainability in the general PA area.

I'm THERE!
Oh...wait... it's at my house.... riiiiiiight....
Actually Philly MeFites, after a bit of soul-searching I have had to face the hard (sad? stark?) reality that my time in Philadelphia is coming to a close. (See my recent question.) I've loved my time here - and one of the especially bright spots has been getting to know you all. But a confluence of particularly-mundane-but-never-the-less-important events has helped me reach the decision to head home to Texas for a spell to get my ducks all in a row before I set out on my next adventure.
So this - and whatever other get-togethers are planned for the next month - will be my last Philly MeFi events for a while. Which I'm very sad about. But that just means I'm going to enjoy them all the more.

All of the Mefi10 threads are still open, but since the "Ten" link isn't in the header of the site anymore, the threads are a little hard to find.
How about we start a Mefi Philly facebook group? The Straightener could advertise his apartment on the page (or anyone else wanting to use it as a type of classifieds), we could coordinate events/logistics (a calendar for meetups?), and--AND--greekphilosophy could keep track of all of his Philly pals that way. I'd be happy to be the admin or mod or whatever of the group, unless someone else wants the responsibility, which I will happily relinquish. It can work in tandem with the metatalk meetup threads. Sound good? Suggestions?

I would certainly join a Facebook group - especially one dedicated to my favorite Philly MeFites. Then again, I know some people are wary of crossing the streams. So if you want to stay in touch via Facebook but aren't interested in joining MetaFilter groups, feel free to add me as a friend and I'll keep your interspaceID all hushhush. www.facebook.com/jphanley
Meanwhile, if anyone saw furniture at my place that they want, I'll be getting rid of it all over the next month and I'm not interested in gouging anyone with high prices. (Cause, um, it's used. And, um, I have to get rid of it or throw it away.) So if you saw anything you think you might like - tables, bookcases, chairs, pianos, etc. let me know and we settle on an outrageously low price for you to take it home with you. Cause lawd knows I am NOT schlepping all that stuff back to Texas.

I live at 1232 Summer Street. Philadelphia PA. 19107. Google maps can zoom you in on it.
Once you are in the vicinity, start looking for a garden gate with a little sign that says "Winter Court." Enter the garden, and you're there! I'm number 8 - the last one all the way at the back of the garden.
If anyone feels unusually prone to getting lost and freaking out and going home, feel free to MeMail me and I'll give you my cell phone number in case you find yourself lost in the wilds of Chinatown and need to be rescued!!

Great to meet you orme and scalefree!
And, as usual, wonderful to see everyone else.
Highlights of this meetup include an abandoned game of Lord of the Rings Risk (after an hour of setup and a handful of turns we opted to talk about enemas instead), piratebowling's newest triumph in dessert-making, no fewer than two discussions of gender-neutral pronouns, and more dramatic reading of The Best of Sixcolors. (I'm beginning to think that I should just have those threads printed and bound for easy access at all meetups. It's like The Art of War but awesomer.) For anyone wondering, youarenothere and scalefree won Risk. At least, that's the story and we're sticking to it, cause otherwise youarenothere might punch me.
Anyway, Philly MeFites, I've had a blast, and I'm sad to say goodbye. Look me up if you're in the Houston area any time in the next year. After that: who knows!?

Anyway, Philly MeFites, I've had a blast, and I'm sad to say goodbye. Look me up if you're in the Houston area any time in the next year. After that: who knows!?
